what is a sign-in seal?

More and more websites offer a sign-in seal. You select an image when you sign-up with the website then confirm it's the right image each time before you enter your username and password. Supposedly a spoof site won't have the image you selected. Is that all there is to it or does it provide a deeper level of security?

Thanks,
Sixto

I think he is refering to something like this, where you have to enter what you see in the box:

Its designed to keep bots and trolling programs from accessing the site because it requires visual input.

No, this is something different. It's a graphic that you pick, and then each time you log in thereafter, the graphic reappears first. If it matches the graphic you originally picked, THEN you enter your login credentials (password) and get logged in. Sort of makes logging in a two-step process...

Waddaya know - the day I ask is the day I notice this ad I've been ignoring -

Spoof? Phishing? What's with the new vocabulary?

I've wondered the same myself. My online banking uses this, and for the life of me I can't figure out how it is any more secure than a site that doesn't use it...
