Antique planers -- who knows 'em?

This J.A. Fay planer is sitting outside my wife's family's house in rural WI. It's dated 1870, with an 1868 patent date, and must weigh a few thousand pounds. The father-in-law would like to see $600 out of it; anyone know of a forum to sell such a beast?

Neat, huh? I wish I could move such a thing. When I get my house in the country (SOMEday) it would be right at home. I thought about eBay, but logistics would be a *****, I think; I'm in IL, it's in rural WI and I can't begin to explain how to get to it out in the country. Plus I know squat-all about it, so my description would be lacking, at best. Google turned up a couple of interesting forums so far; maybe I'll find a home for it that way. Thanks!

With a description like that I'd wind up bidding on it.

I kind of thought the same thing, Tom, but so many of the moving parts are still free that I that I figured someone might just make use of it or its parts, or someone might buy it for use in a restaurant or something like that. You never know!

You might want to post it on tool timer (http://www.tooltimer.com) classifieds and see if you get some interest. There are some antique woodworking museums that you might consider donating to and taking the tax credit if they are a NPO.

I think you may have a hard time getting an individual to buy it, but:

You may consider contacting your State's Agricultural Museum. They may be interested in purchasing the thing or giving your FIL a nice tax write off for donating it. My old man owns a farm with the oldest barn in the State on it in NC, and he did a deal with some museums several years back to donate and sell some things that were starting to get vandalized by *******s who were tresspassing on the property

The tax writeoffs are a good idea... the only issue is that the father-in-law flies under the fiscal radar for the most part and I doubt he's a "tax expert," if you catch my drift. I'll mention it to him, nevertheless. Thanks!

Email pics to Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut, they got a website.

They are always interested in large scale vintage woodworking machinery of the type in use in the late 19th-early 20th century, give'em a try, they might always be able to recommend someone if they pass.

Get him to give it to you, you take the deduction and give him half of what the deduction was to you in cash

I don't think I make enough to mess with deductions! Hmmm... now that I think of it, this is my first year filing as a married couple. Don't you have to give $7k/yr or more to claim charitable donations? $7k is more than 1/3 of my yearly pay!

I was hoping you'd see this thread, Carleton. If anyone knew of a place that'd want this, I figured you would. Thanks for the tip!

Here's a link I hope may help you.http://www.mysticseaport.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.viewPage&page_id=F2A992D7-65B8-D398-794383FADB434F47

They actually restore wood boats of all sizes and also use a good deal of period equipment, you should see the large old diesel from the 20's/30's that powers the sawmill.
