I remember a write up in Hod Rod magazine about 2 score years ago that showed a pagoda SL with a small block Ford for power. IIRC, the owner got it after it had been totaled in a fire. The SBF was an easy fit, plus parts and service are readily available.

When I was younger I built a few hot rod engines (yes, they did have internal combustion engines when I was young) and, of course at that time, all had
carbs on them. Now days, even with all the advancements in fuel delivery systems, they are still using carbs. Why don't hot rod engines today use EFI systems?

That is the reason I'd like to do the SBF. As much as I like MB when they break down on the way back from Laredo at 3 am you are basically SOL. With things like the fuel distribution valve at $1,400+ and the cheapest part of the fuel system sensing system at nothing less than $350 a pop I don't really see a reason to stick with a 30 year old motor. The motor only has 113k miles on it and I an sure that it will go another 113k but not only does it only get about 14-15 mpg but deep down inside I really want to put a SBF in my SLC.

My guess is.....

1. Cost

2. Complexity

3. Lack of knowledge

I would suggest replacing the timing chain and sprockets before installing the engine in another vehicle. It costs very little, and is easy to do when out of the car, and they are usually only good for 70,000 miles or so before showing wear.

I hadn't planned using the MB engine in another car even though the engine is in great shape. I had a new chain and slides done about 10k ago and the engine runs as well as any. Should all this come about I will sell both engine and trans.
