Can anyone tell me why my check engine light would be on on my 95 jag xj6 I just had the thing inspected and all of the liquids and gauges are on point.

Thanks, Beach

Hello beachlvr58,

Did you notice that this is a Mercedes Benz forum when you were signing up? I have seen Jags discussed here in general, but not specific problems.

I'd rather discuss Jaguars than the never ending requests for a free carfax and assinine questions about burning grannys magic elixer in diesels.

This car should be able to have the codes read through the control panel(the panel that gives information about fuel mileage and such). The owners manual should give directions and a list of code definitions. My 1992 XJS developed a check engine light, and I read the codes and fixed the problem(bad sensor).

John,

I have an slk 320 also that is probably why I registered to this site a few months back. I guess I got confused as to which site I was posting in this time. I appreciate your tips though and will check my manual..thanks a bunch, Lisa

Lisa - hit an Autozone, NAPA or equivalent they can plug in and run the codes for the JAG. If you are lucky there may be only 1 code but you may end up with several codes to check and run down. The parts stores will do this for free with hopes of selling you what you need. There to many possibilities to even begin to discuss on what code might be triggering your CEL.

No problem. As an aside here is a great Jag site: http://www.jag-lovers.org/
It is a little difficult to wade through, but is full of great info.

This happens on some cars if the gas cap isn't on tight or at all. This is true of Fords and Mercury cars. Ford owns Jaguar, so it might be the problem in your case.

All vehicles equipped with an OBD-II emission control system will trigger a fault code if the gas cap is loose. I think OBD-II system was installed in most automobiles and light duty trucks sold in the U.S. onward from the 1996 model year.

I'm with John...

I too had a 92 XJS, and it seemed to be riddled with sensor issues. Once, I took it to the dealer to get a sensor replaced due to the CE light. Got home that evening, and while the car was idling in the driveway, the light came back on again! Another sensor!

Not true - I always gas up our year-old minivan with the engine running, a 5 minute proposition which does not trigger the CEL.

I'd look at the O2 sensors first, since that's almost always the case when the MIL comes on in OBD-1 cars.

Disconnect the battery, reconnect. If light is still on, take to dealer.

Six minutes is the tolerance threshold for the system. So there.

Oh, I typo'd left out the 6 and the period - it takes me 6.5 minutes to fill up.

That's pretty funny, because the same thing happened to me. The shop replaced the left bank O2 sensor and on the way home the CE light came back on. I looked up the code and it was the coolant temp sensor for the fuel injection, thankfully, a easy and inexpensive fix.

When I first bought the car, the battery would go stone dead in a few days. One night I walked into the garage and saw the headlights turning on and off by themselves, causing the dead battery. I thought the car was possesed. It was the "headlamp logic relay" that had shorted out, and btw, it was made by Bosch, not Lucas.

Some late models MB owners would love to have only those problems, however, so I consider myself to be rather lucky with it.
