How do you take care of cats?

My sister in law gave me two cats a few months ago and I want to make sure I'm taking care of them properly. I've never owned cats before just dogs.
I feed them and give them water every day of course. I brush them, pet them, play with them.
But what's the deal with hairballs. Are they bad for them? How do you know if they have them? How do you fix it?

What about the litter box. What's the best kind of litter? Does it need to be completely changed or do you just top it off every once in a while?

What's the best food?

Any comments and suggestions would be appreciated

Btw they are two female Chocolate Point Siamese, around 6 years old. One of them is a Hemingway. They are both Spayed and have their shots and are in great health.

Your in the right direction with what your doing now and if they get hairballs you can buy this stuff at the grocery store called "hair-ball" remedy and clean the litter box everyday, the cats will let you know if they don't like the litter...I use the scoopable stuff (and no there is no litter you can put down the toilet that's an urban myth). Hope this helps. Take them to the vet's once a year to have their teeth checked.

Cats are evil. I believe that if you check the original Hebrew text carefully you will find that cats were part of the curse upon man after the fall in the Garden of Eden.

With a sense of style. Rent a black 745Li and pretend you're the bull and Morris is the matador.

That damned curse. It is all Eve's fault.

We have a couple of found cats and we take them to the vet annually for required shots, feed them Hills CD cat food, they have a litter box that they use some, but mostly go outside. Regarding the catbox, if you just keep scooping and adding it will get stinky after awhile, so you should completely change it if it is stinky. You can also get enclosed catboxes with filters that help with the smell.
