waste oil burners

Just wondered what eveyones thoughts on waste oil burners were for heating a garage.

There is one for sale near my area and I want to use it but not sure if it is really worth it.

#1 They are messy and a pain to clean (This is a home made burner not one of the really nice ones from commercial dealers)

#2 I would have to do some drilling for a vent in the garage to get rid of the fumes.

#3 Safety....not so sure about this

The good

#1 Cheap free fuel and if it burns clean good for the enviroment

#2 Just a little different and it is much more quite than a propane heater if I purchased one of those

What are others thoughs with these things or experience. I'm not so sure how cold it gets here in NC but I'm assuming it is cold enough that I wouldn't want to be in my garage for hours in the night without some heat.

The ones that dont use an air compressor do not burn all that clean. There is some bad stuff in drain oil. The fuel is cheap and plentifull though.

there is an open source plan to turn a gas hot water heater into a waste oil burner.

Been using one for years to heat domestic hot water and the carriage barn, old technology, gotta use 2 massive oil filters and a plenum-retort system kept pre-heated by a propane flame for efficient flash point vaporisation, gas flame ignition as well due to the specific gravity of most crankcase oils, expect twice yearly retort and nozzle disassembly and cleaning.

What brand do you have? My friend at work wants to buy one right away but he does not know which one to get. Got any pictures? We get used engine oil 300 gals at a time
