Doesn't surprise me, an amazing amount of ordinance was dropped/left over there.

Article in the Trib yesterday about it.

Blew quite a crater, 6ft deep 25ft round.

They talked one of the bomb disposal guys there, he said they'll have work for him the rest of his life (no pun intended). Sounded like they have a staff, like we would a fire dept. just for this.

Considering the millions of bombs dropped, not even counting the mines, mortars, hand grenades etc it sounds reasonable.

When I was stationed in Okinawa from 1983 thru '85, they were always showing commercials on Armed Forces TV about unexploded ordinance on the island. I guess there is still quite a bit all over there too.

i suppose having things like that lying all around might give a country like say france or germany a different viewpoint than the usa which has never in modern times had a war on our soil.

i doubt if we ever find live cannonballs from the civil war anymore.

You would be amazed at the crap they dug up and still do around Gettysburg. There was so much fighting any time they dig around that area for anything house, well, farm they come up with stuff. One farmer in the years following the battle filled a shed with stuff he plowed up in his fields!

not at all surprising.

i read a book about the battle at pea ridge a couple of months ago. the battle lasted i think three days. in areas the trees were totally shot off. in other areas of no trees you couldnt walk around without stepping on shot.

it was a very very brutal war.

world war one might be worse though for carnage. i dont know if ww1 matches any of the one day casualties that we experienced in the civil war though.

england and france though lost almost a whole generation of their men in ww1. that is why they were reluctant to engage in huge man chewing battles in ww2.

When I was a kid my father was stationed in Okinawa as well. I can remember I was exploring with a friend and we came across an old American army helmet and a rifle. The rifle was laying against a tree. Both were very rusty. You can imagine what may have happened.

Maybe a buddy got shot and his friend lay his helmet and rifle there to assist him. Medics came and took him away on the stretcher but they forgot the rifle and helmet. It was kinda' cool to find it.

Lots of land mines all over Bosnia too.

And they recently pulled out an old T34 Russian tank from a lake in Estonia also.

I looked at the thread title and thought you were talking about Ford Pintos on highways.

Heck no. As a 5-6 y.o. kid, I had no interest in that stuff. My friends brother did tho. I remember he brought up a shovel to carry the helmet home. It was so rusty and very fragile (the helmet, that is. not the shovel)
