Today was it, I called the Teamsters and got the paperwork coming for my pension. I worked 29 LONG years at UPS. I have been off since February because my back is a train wreck.
I wonder how much freight and weight I have handled in that time. I am only 54 and looking forward to some freedom and traveling. Chris

Congrats, Motorhead. I'm closing in on 53 myself and hope to be out of my current profession before I'm 56. Fingers crossed....
I know some UPS folks who came out pretty well after the company had its IPO -- hope that's your situation as well. Getting out at a relatively young age, you can eventually take up a pursuit you love without any worry about where the next mortgage payment is coming from. AFTER you've taken a well-deserved break, of course! I'm looking myself at a plunge into grass-roots politicical activism once I slip the yoke. I aspire to make myself a serious pain in the ass.... |

Hell, I was having so much fun running my own business that I didn't retire until I sold it at age 67. You should have seen the fun I had starting Medicare at 65 and having them NOT start paying me Social Security at the same time. (Didn't particularly want the added tax burden.) Their computer couldn"t understand why I didn't want SS as early as possible. When I finally did sign up for SS, there was a decent lump sum waiting for me too.
Enjoy your retirement, Motorhead. I am. Cheers, Wes |

I really was kind of forced to retire because my back just wasn't holding up loading UPS trucks every morning. Hell, I was older than most of the PARENTS of the kids that worked with me. I enjoyed working with the guys. I DIDN'T enjoy the "sisters" that worked there. I am adjusting to DOMESTIC duties . My wife has gone back to school full time to get her teaching credential so I am Mr. MOM.
