dead Jeep Cherokee

I have a dead 99 jeep sitting in the yard, just in time for the holidays... It is not my car, but If it can be driven out of here, the holiday will be a happier time...

can any one give me some suggestions on how to find the fuel pump relay on this thing? I know they exist, but have never needed to find one before, and I hope it would be a simple fix such as this.. as the car turns over, but never fires.. with no smell of gas at the tail pipe..

or any other general suggestions on where to look?
thanks,
jason

Go down to harbour freight and buy a set of injector test lights for about $6. If the light does not flash when cranking you probably have a bad crank sensor in the distributor or on the flywheel. If the computer does not see that the engine is turning it wont turn on the fuel pump or fire the injectors.

uh oh

If it is like the wife's POS 2000 Grand Cherokee you will need to drop the fuel tank to replace the fuel pump. Try to get as much gasoline out of the tank as possible. Using a lift and a transmission jack makes the job a little easier.

first check to see if you have fuel at the rail.. depress the shroeder valve but be careful as it will squirt majorly if there is fuel there.

you may also want to go to pirate4x4 as that place is loaded with heepheads who know everything about these vehicles. good luck.

If you have fuel pressure I would say the position sensors are ok otherwise the computer would not turn on the fuel pump. Check for spark and report back.

No spark.. and no clue as to how to proceed.. pull the distributor cap off, I guess there are no points.. and I am still in the stone age in regard to how gas engines work, well anything beyond a '46 dodge, or an old lawn mower..

check and see if you have spark coming from the coil. that may be your problem. it still could be crank positioning sensor. can you recover error codes from this thing?

Ok, will check the coil, or try to..

As far as trouble codes, I had a 92 lebaron which would flash the check engine light as a trouble code becon, will try that on this rig.. may be Mopar still has the same way of doing things .

thanks again for the hand holding help, as I would be stuck with out your remedial tutoral advice.

Ok, no juice comming out of the coil, took the two pronged wire going to the coil (I assume it is the power lead) and checked for juice, with the key on.. nothing.. although I dont know why there are two wires going to the coil..?

did not make any distance on getting a trouble code out of the dasboard lights as of yet..

the coil: either do the crude test with a plug or screw driver grounded on the block or check the resistance.. not sure what it should be though.

i really don't know how the codes recovery works on a heep. you may need a reader but it may also flash them some other way.

as to hand holding: lol.. sure.. we'll just have to do a beer if i ever come back to VT.. i miss your state as it is one of my faves.

Why don't you hook the power wagon to it and tow it off? Don't kill yourself working on a car over the holiday!

I gotta say I would rather be working on a 123, But I tell my self at the least it is an inline six..

it seems to me as if the coil should have voltage when the ignition comes on, so may be I am getting closer, of course the sun is going down, and it is gonna get colder as this day makes progress..

Does the coil recieve electricty from the computer somehow? and is there some way to hot wire the coil to get this brick out of the driveway? may be that is a dumb idea, but it felt good to say..

You don't say which Cherokee you have but, they have a pretty simple ing system. If you have no spark coming out of the coil, then it is either the coil itself or the ignition module. On the passenger side of the car, there is a black box. Pop the top off it and check all your fuses. This is also where your relays are.

BTW, IMHO there is no such thing as a dead Jeep, it is only resting.......
