6.2/6.5L turbo diesel questions
Ok, I am toying wiht the idea of putting a diesel in an old corvette...? is that REALLY dumb? I have read that the 6.2's are about as heavy as a BB Chevy, so it ought to fit.. If a candidate could be found with a 700R overdrive transmission, the car ought to run ok and get decent fuel ecomomy..
So my questions are: is the 6.5 about the same size as the 6.2? and when did the turbocharged version show up, and does any one have any pratical experience working with or driving these power plants? Do you think that the end result would be a happy combonation or not?

the 6.2 is the same pretty much as the 6.5 except for th eturbo. i dont know how the turbo sits so fitting it in the corvette may or may not work. i think the 6.2 should fit though.
i probably wouldnt do it though. if i wanted better economy in a vette i would put in a six speed or a taller rear end ratio. it would be about sale proof i think. you would have the only one on the block though. tom w

I'm not familiar with the corvette engine bay, but I can tell you the turbo and piping on the 6.5 takes up a lot of room. Sticks way out on passenger side. There is a crossover pipe coming from the left exhaust manifold into the back of the right, and then the exhaust exits down from the turbo a little forward of that. We replaced the heads on my son's 6.5 last year. If you do try a 6.5, go with a '99. last year had a nice increse in torque (45 lbs) but only a 5 hp increase. '99 6.5 is rated at 430lbs and 195 hp, I believe. You will want the big automatic. The NV4500 manual is almost taller than the car (not really, but it's big). 6.2 would probably fit without too much trouble, but hot ones were only 140 hp.

there is a guy over on the dieselpage. name of buzz bradley that has put a 6.5 n/a in a 77 corvette.he claims 48 mpg imperial.search on the dieselpage under readers rigs.it shows an under hood pic.i doubt you could get a turbo plumbed to work without some major cutting.the 6.2 turbo sets towards the front of the right ex manifold and on the isde, whereas the 6.5 it sets on top of the manifold right above the 2 middle ports, this would cause hood clearance problems.if you wanted to use a 6.2 i have one with a 700r4 attached i just pulled out of my rusted out suburban.if you need any more info let me know.i could go on and on about 6.2/6.5

one thing i forgot in 94 the 6.5 went to an electronic inj pump these will need the entire engine wiring harness and computer to make work.if you do use a newer one you will have to use an older pump.the 4911 pump will get you the most H.P.

I've got a Grumman Olson step van with a 6.2 diesel. Lots of torque. That big thing fairly jumps. No turbo. Looks a lot like a BB chev.
No more to offer, sorry.

Catmandoo So the pre-94, 6.2L would have a 4911 injection pump? So my second thought is: Ok, put a small belt driven supercharger on it IF it is too slow in NA form.. How does that sound.. also I kinda like the simplicity of a mechanical pumped diesel.. computers would make the swap far too dificult/expensive.

the 4911 pump came on the 92-93 heavy duty pickups etc.3/4 ton and 1 ton without the egr valve.not all of them had this pump though and you need to check the number on the tag on the pump.i believe the 4911 pump is 6.5 only,i don't recall ever hearing of one in a 6.2,but i could be wrong.i would advise against the blower as these don't like much boost over about 15 lbs.my banks puts out a max of about 7-8 lbs of boost, and the factory 6.5 turbo it is governed at like 10 lbs.

you also need to beware of driving at higher rpm sustained. in the pickups and suburbans if they ran a 410 rear end they tended to break out main bearing webs. insert a 373 and they last about forever. so choose final drive ratios carefully.

If it happens, I would try to go as low as realistic, may about a 3.50 to 1 or 3.23 to 1... depending on the transmission having OD.. would like the peak Torque to show up at about 60 MPH or so, unless it becomes a game to see how fast the thing would do the 1/4 mile.. not that the Rear end ratio would be bumped up, just to find the one that uses the engine's torque.. and heck, a Vette is not a very heavy rig, so it should not need much mechanical advanage of a higher numbered ring and pinion.

We have a '93 6.5 and like it. (for a GM)
I recommend you go with the ’93 6.5. From what I’ve heard, the years previous to, as well as following that year had waste gate issues. The ’93 has a very simple mechanical waste gate system with no external inputs to go wrong. Also, the following years had IPs that were a nightmare of electrical issues. This is all just stuff I’ve heard. As for personal experience. We have a ’93 (K2500 EC) on the ranch that has only had one mechanical issue. At 175K it broke one of the 35 cent plastic rocker arm keepers on the #3 intake valve. That rocker slid off the valve. Let the push rod drive up into the rocker cover. Slide back down an oil return port. Hit the cam and put a heck of a score on it. Dropped down into the crank and got fired right back up into the skirt of the #1 piston before falling back into the crank where was shot into the side of the oil pan and its ~9” length was transformed into a mess of metal that fit in the bottom of a Dixie cup.
Good news is – Those engines are so easy to overhaul, my daughter (now 9) handled it when she was 5. It’s run without missing a beat ever since. (yes – she insisted the oil fill tube be painted pink.)
