I want to get a GPS for Christmas

Got a great idea for the grandkids for Christmas. Get them a GPS and we can go Geocaching on the weekends. Any recommendations out there for a good small unit ? Thanks.

For the money....

You can't go wrong with a Garmin GPS(map) 76.
It's the all around good guy for handheld GPS units.

That you're going caching with the kids is awesome. You (and they) will love it. We try to get out a couple of times a month for it. My kids have map-76s and I back them up with an old GPSIII. (Just for grins, and to check their numbers). We have a blast planting caches too.

Lots of great units out there. I think we did a thread here not too long ago on them. Do a search.

Can't go wrong with Garmin. We swear/live by them.

then again...

We did a few geocaches last year. It was fun but the novelty wore off pretty quick. Our kids are in their mid teens so other interests take priority. There are some creative caches out there. I might pick up on it again.

Yep - Unless you’re one of those GeoGeeks, the novelty can run thin quick.
What we do is make it just part of what we’re out there for (outdoor exploration and fun w/ the kids) and not why we are there. Being a setter/hider is often a lot more fun than seeking as well. We’ve put together some wicked caches that folks seemed to enjoy. Part of the fun can also come from the posted replies from the finders.

Novelty or not. Just wanting to get outdoor with the kids is a great thing. Hats off to you.

Agreed, I have been using handheld gps units since the late 80's and Garmins product is superior in almost every respect. I do admit that the reception is better on others but for day to day use the Garmin 76 series is the most versatile unit on the market today.

I just picked up a Garmin Rino 530. Overkill for what you are looking for, but a great GPS/radio.

They are all pretty good, but I prefer Garmin. Go to a store look at a few and buy the unit that you like the most.

You want WAAS btw, I think they all have it but some of the $90 specials may not.

I keep asking for a Garmin 496, saying I would even be happy with a 396, that I'd put it to good use.
Something about food on the table and mortgage seems to always come up, though.

I got a Garmin Geko from Fry's for $50 to more accurately record mileage in my W126 until I get the odo fixed. Never had a handheld before, this thing is awesome! Breadcrumbs, waypoints, WAAS, trip computer, etc. I rarely go camping/hiking, but the next time I do I will definitely bring this with me.

I also, at the same time, got a Garmin i2 turn-by-turn Nav for use in the car. I love it.

Get them Silva compasses first and teach them how to use those, that way when the batteries arc 100 mi. offshore or your handhelds fizzle when they are in the bush, they will still be able to make it back

Damn - In 1970 you could buy a new Dodge Challenger for the cost of the 496!
