OK, that's it...

... I'm done with old Benzes. The motor of my beloved W115 300 D died a couple of months ago and there is no way of replacing it (I tried but failed and it's next to impossible with my budget to continue with this car). And I don't like newer models, they look and are too "modern".

The money I'm saving right now will be spent on a relatively new american or japanese made car. Period.

Shouldn't give up on it ...

What's wrong with it? Unless you get a Toyota you might be in for a surprise ... and even with a Toyota ....

The only thing I'd do at this point would be put in a freshly rebuilt engine..... which is too expensive. I love the W115 but I won't spend thousands of $ on a 30-year old car. Yeah I don't know yet which car to buy. It must be a good, reliable daily driver.

Good luck man.... What about a slightly newer Benz? I have a 92 Range Rover.... It has been great........ but gas prices make it far more exspensive to drive. You will be dissappointed on what is out there now. A good diesel is worth it!!!!!!!!!!! I have a 71 220 diesel.. I have put money into it over the last 8 years.... and don't regret it an ounce.... My friends have ruined their new cars and their "reliable" hondas, lexus, etc...... A little TLC will go a long way......... Get a new engine for her.. trust me!

Welcome to the forum Colorado. I've read your posts... 500k+ miles is quite an achievement, I'm not as lucky it seems, with a dead motor at 190k miles. And I can't do the job myself.

Don't give up!

Find a good used engine for a few hundred bucks and swap it in. If you have a free weeked and a engine hoist ($115 or so at harbor freight) you can do the swap.

My blue car had a dead engine when I got it....

That's what I did, it turned out to have bad cylinder - I paid $800 for the labor.

There's your problem - it was a bad used engine, not a good one.

Sorry to hear of your painful experience.

I figure you're in Arizona, if the the car is rust free and the interior acceptable, it's a keeper. Get back on it whenever you can. Maybe a 240d engine would fit...just find one.

6) How much?
5) My mechanic(s) won't do it - they're fed up with swapping non-working motors...
4) Hmmm...
3) Potomac?
2) How much (I mean, seriously...)
1) Would be a couple thousand $ =

Thanks for the reply btw, I'm always open for suggestions.

A few ideas:

1) Rebuild your own motor
2) Buy a reman/core
3) Call Potomac and get one out of a wreck. He'll guarantee it's not DOA
4) Get out Excel, and figure out how much you'll save by keeping your Merc
5) Ask the recipient of your $800 to help with a re-install. At worst I'm sure he'll cut you some slack.
6) Buy one of my 3 S500s LOL

But in the best of Holiday spirits, I certainly wish you success
