we were sitting in the best chinese restaurant in town (which i designed and built) eating chicken and broccoli. i was marveling at the tender chicken which didnt have a texture like any chicken i had ever eaten. so i asked my father, an old farm boy, "dad. what part of the chicken is this meat?" and he pondered for a minute or so and said "egg sack".

eeeeeewwwww!

I helped my dad put away groceries and put a big plastic jug of apple juice in the fridge. Later on I came in all thirsty and poured me a big glass and gulped it down. It was actually vegetable oil.

I lived in an apartment for 2 years above a vietnamese family. One day a knock on the door from UPS (I think). They ask if I would sign for a package on dry ice from singapore. I signed and they picked it up 15 minutes later. In gratitude they brought me up a bowl of food. I ate it and it had to have the most tender "beef" i ever ate. I asked them what it was and they replied "dog"
I never did eat their food again.

the most exotic thing i have had is ocotpus and squid i suppose....

that i know of. i have eaten in a lot of chinese restaurants.

one time i bought a beef tongue. i had had some in germany and it was very good. so i got out a book and figured out what to do (you have to cook it and then skin it), and made spagetti sauce with it.
so we had my brother over for supper. so he is eating a big plate of the spagetti and says "wow, this meat is great, what is it?" i say "beef tongue" now you have to picture him with a big mouthful of spagetti and another fork full heading that way. so he just makes a kindof involuntary gag motion and gulps the bite down while his hand slowly lowers the forkful back onto his plate. he never said another word....i watched, and he never took another bite.
so everybody has a different tolerance for unusual food. i usually try about whatever folks are eating unless i know i have had it before and dont like it.

its part of the fun of going strange places.

my associate just came back from two weeks in cambodia and parts around there. he had some alcoholic beverage that came out of a big bottle with a cobra and a scorpion in it.

i am not sure i would do that.

When I was dating my wife, we went out for Chinese food one night. She always loved to bring leftovers home for the "kittys". Well, on that night, both of the cats wanted nothing to do with the so-called chicken she offered them. She was aghast, and told me that she knew her cats well enough to know that they were turning down the food because it was cat instead of chicken. I tried to keep a straight face and humor her because she was very upset. As it turns out, the place got busted around a year later for selling dog and cat meat in the Chinese dishes.

Boy, did I hear a bunch of "I told you so" after that.

Many years ago in Europe, I was hungry and short on cash. The resturant menu had beef steak for about 5 bucks and "steak" for about 2.50. I asked the waiter what the difference was........

Beef steak, moooooo.

Steak, weeeehehehe (like a horse)!

You know, steak ain't bad at all! And I love cats, they taste just like chicken! I've eaten possum twice, and once was really enough. Raccoon bar-b-qued was actually not bad at all, passed on the fried armadillo though. Had bear chilli once and it was bearly edible...don't know it was the meat or the cook or both! But to the subject at hand, chicken, I'm just not that crazy about it, too bland.
