Those darned high school students
This is where my youngest kid goes to school.
Bot ------------------------- Students honored for CPR Duo helped man who collapsed at football game Kyle Jackson kjackson@theadvertiser.com In an auditorium filled with about 100 people Wednesday, Lafayette High School students Sarah Decuir and Camille Vincent, both 17-year-old seniors, were given the meritory service award by Acadian Ambulance Paramedic Field Supervisor Roy Payne. The LHS Academy of Health Careers students were honored for performing CPR on a man who went into cardiac arrest a month ago at a high school football game. "It takes a special person to put aside their fears and do what they did," Payne said. "They did something that we at Acadian Ambulance think should be honored." Sarah and Camille were attending a Lafayette High football game Nov. 17 when a man sitting in the stands collapsed. After several people asked if anyone knew CPR, both Sarah and Camille rushed to the man's aid and performed CPR until EMS was able to arrive and treat him. "It's great that these students were EMS-trained to perform life-saving procedures before medical services arrived," said Stacey Thibodeaux, director of the academy. Jennifer Morrow, assistant director of the program, agreed. "We trained them in basic life support skills," Morrow said. "We always wanted our students to have knowledge of basic life-saving procedures just in case something like this ever happened." Camille's mother, Karen Vincent, who works at Lafayette General Medical Center, said she was proud of her daughter, and Sarah. "I think it's very moving that Acadian Ambulance is rising up to honor these girls," Vincent said. But Vincent admitted she was surprised at her daughter's reaction to the situation. "Camille doesn't tend to be a spontaneous person, but when everything happened, she said she couldn't even remember getting to the man. All she knows is that she responded, and that's a good thing," Vincent said. Camille agreed. "I wasn't thinking about it," Camille said. "I just performed CPR and did just what I was taught to do." Morrow said she hopes Sarah and Camille know and understand how special their action was. "We're extremely proud of them and their confidence in their own abilities to help those in need," Morrow said. "When I taught the CPR class, I never in a million years thought that one of our students would be in that kind of situation." |

Hopefully Acadian's bringing this to light will encourage other students to learn CPR.
btw, I wonder if I am the only one here who knows how to properly pronounce Vincent? |

Probably only those who've been around Vincent, Louisiana where coincidentally, I'll be buying my satsumas from Mr Vincent. You've probably been lost out there, near Meaux. I had a piss-poor crop this year and our in-laws want their oranges!

Ha! W's mom is a Meaux.
Had an uncle up last night from Broussard. We ate a deboned chicken stuffed with rice dressing from Don's in Scott. I liked it better than the shrimp one from last week He's bringing me a stuffed beef tongue next week--man I love the oil business!! |
