Pacific Northwest Wind Storm

Hopefully the forcasts for the impending "big blow" we are expecting here in Western Washington are on the dramatic side.

If not I will take pictures of any damage I encounter.

I am loading up the truck to spend the night at my parents home. Their home is surrounded with trees! Mine is not. I did lose a few shingles from my roof from the blast we got a couple of days ago. The latest system is supposed to make the last one look like a mild sneeze.

I got the chain saw, fuel, and other goodies loaded up. I wired their home for a generator a couple of years ago, so I got that base covered.

We have had lots of rain over the past month or so and the ground is saturated, that will not help the situation.

The news is calling this the storm of the decade!

Wish me luck, I hope I do not need it!

Jeff

Double wow. I'm planning to drive up there on or about the 22nd, as far as Olympia, anyway, and it's about the same.

Got family there.

I haven't heard about this. I have a brother in Port Orchard.

Fill your bathtub with water. And anything else you can find. That way if the water goes out you can still flush the toilet.

or drinking water.. general rule of thumb is use the toilet only for solid wastes when you cannot flush it the regular way... their are trees outside and shrubs for the women folk... or just dont flush the liquid..since its pointless to flush another liquid

WOW, what a night!

Excuse me if I ramble, I have had no sleep since 5 am yesterday!

The storm lived up to it's expectations. Over a million without power in western washington alone.

It started at about 5 pm last night with massive rain front with it's own wind damage. Some areas saw over an inch of rain in minutes. It was raining sideways.

After that fun had passed it was a bit breezy but the stars were out and it was actually fairly mild. The real fun was just about 2 hours away.

The massive low pressure system with hurricane wind speeds and barametric lows was approaching fast. The wind picked up just kept howling. The gusts were house shaking. You should have seen those huge evergreen trees around my parents house bending in the wind. Every so often you would hear what sounded like a rifle shot, a tree snapping. The pretty blue flashes in the sky as transformers exploded, very interesting to watch.

I attempted to get some sleep around midnight, not happening! Everytime I was just about ready to doze off the house would shudder and my dog wanted to climb in bed with me. My mother was an absolute disaster herself.

Lost power about 2 am. I comforted both my mom and the dog until about 4 am when there was a noticeable drop in both the wind and the gusts. I ventured out about 6 am and sized up the damage.

The parents place was in pretty good shape. Tree debris, some large limbs, and the odd smaller tree down around their home but no real damage. I hauled out the generator and connected up the cord to the Gentran switch. I clicked off the main and had the heat going about 6:30am. The house was toasty warm by 7.

My parents home seems to be in an area where power never goes out, not so lucky this time. By 10 am we all had our showers and breakfast. I decided to take the generator off line to change the oil. The generator has sat in the basement over 3 years with no use. I tested the land line and power had been restored.

I will return to their place later this evening or tomorrow to do maintanance on the gen. I was amazed that the gen started on the second pull. I put the max dosage of Stabil in the tank 3 years ago, turned off the fuel, and ran the carb dry. My mother told me she is thankfull that I am always so prepared for disasters. The rest of my family and friends make fun of me.

My house did not fair so well. I have roof damage. See photo. I stopped at the local Gray Lumber on my way home and they were doing a brisk business in 3-tab. My roof is a piece of junk. It will be replaced next summer with a metal one but for now I must get cracking on the repairs. Fixing single sections of 3-tab is time consuming and it will probably take me several hours to fix the 35 or so broken sections of 3-tab. I even went over my entire roof this summer and tared each tab down. Still got spanked. Can you imagine the damage I would have suffered if I had not done so.

On my way home I lost count of the number of homes with similar damage to mine. One roof looking like a giant checker board. Looks like the roofers are going to be busy. My neighbor lost a parkway tree. Dropped right on the street. Pulled the root ball right out of the ground.

The amazing thing is, it looks like my house never lost power. No blinking clocks to be found. Go figure!

We're not getting a big storm but the weather sure is weird...

It was about +12 C outside this afternoon and the grass is green. Usually, we'd be knee-high in snow right now.

Hope all you west coasters are doing ok!

Sorry. After the “junk science” thread, I couldn’t resist.

Hope it all clears out soon. I haven’t been watching that area, but will drop into Port Hadlock next week for two days. Wood boat thing. Love that place.

Hope all is well with everything else up there, 79-240D. Hope you can get that roof fixed before the snows sit on it. Good luck to ya. Stay warm and Merry Christmas.

Port Hadlock! I think I found it on the map. Near Whidbey Island, last report I saw on the news about that area is no power and it could be a considerable amount of time until is restored. Whidbey Island is inland of the mouth of the Straight of Juan De Fuca, ground zero! I would advise you to check the status of anywhere in western Washington prior to leaving.

I almost finished fixing my roof and am just now finishing dinner. I got a chance to watch the news. My little adventure with this storm is not the norm. The damage is widespread and in some areas power will not be restored for 7 to 10 days. There are soooooo many trees down that power crews are spending more time removing trees than fixing power lines.

I consider myself to be very lucky. We seem to have dodged serious damage.

Here in Vancouver..

...we got hit pretty bad. Winds were gusting to 160 kph on some parts of Vancouver island. Stanly Park in Vancouver has lost many trees and yes the power has been out in many spots. I believe the last blast we had that is comparible was Typhoon Frieda back in 1962.

NICE TENT! Watch out putting that thing down at your campsite, high winds, big surf, and downed trees all lead to an unusually high amout of debris in the water.

I boated these waters for a long time, nothing gets your heart racing like having to spill everyones drinks doing the deadhead(debris) dance at full throttle.

Crap
Does this mean the price of red cherries is going up ????
They're already like 3.99/lb here.....

I actually have a good friend on Whidbey Island in CLinton area.
I would bet that place is a mess if alot of trees came down. Last time I was there I had to drive almost into freakin Vancouver to find a good hardware store.

I will send D batteries in exchange for good red cherries!!

Lucky for us - We don’t have a transom or prop to tear off like a boat. We’ve bounced off quite a few rocks and floating logs. Landed between some pretty tall swells, too.
It’s the wind that can really mess you up on touch-down. I’ll have to keep an eye on that factor. Won’t go in if it’s too gusty.

The “Go-No Go” gauge gets recalibrated when the kids are with us.
