Selling on eBay

I'm starting to sell some stuff on eBay; the winner of my last auction doesn't respond to my emails and didn't pay his last 2 auctions he won. The bad thing is he over bid another bidder at the last minute, pissing me off.

How much time do you give a "winner" of your auction to pay or respond?

Maybe I'm a little impatient, auction closed Tuesday noon.

When you refer to emails, I don't know if you're e-mailing him directly or sending messages through the eBay system. If there appears to be any communication problem when using direct e-mail, then I would recommend sending such messages through the eBay system. Some folks have such aggressive spam filters that it's tough to get through.

With the exception of a couple of particular circumstances, the seller must wait 7 days after auction close before he may initiate an "Unpaid Item Dispute". Look it up in the eBay help section for details.

I agree. You're a little impatient

Do what you reasonably can to communicate with the other party, then let it ride until you can, if necessary, initiate the unpaid item process. Don't waste time and effort worrying about an imagined problem; save it for real problems.

You're right, I'm just a person that pays asap. I'm trying to communicate with him through the eBay system.

Give them ten days unless you specify otherwise in your auction. If no pay after that time hit the drop down menu on "my ebay" Report unpaid item. I don't know what eBay sends them but the dozen or so I have done this to usually choke up the cash shortly afterwards (or give you a sob story).

If this really bothers you, then you could exercise your privilege of ending the auction early and selling the item to the current high bidder at the current price.

I think that, in the vast majority of circumstances, that would be a foolish thing to do. It would exclude those serious buyers who, very sensibly, have their bids placed in the last few seconds of auctions. The only time I would bid earlier would be to kill the "Buy It Now" option for an item.

When I'm selling something, I don't care when they bid - as long as they do bid (and pay, and don't cause some sort of crazy inconvenience or trouble for me.)

Did you accept PayPal for payment? If not and you are impatiant, don't blame the buyer. For a lousy 4-5% fee why would people want to wait by the mail box for day's or even weeks for their money. I usually won't deal with sellers that don't accept paypal, waste of time to complete payment and a big hassle doing the money order thing.

I accept PayPal for payment, I stated that I would prefer Pay Pal. I will give him 10 days. I guess I was a little inpatient.

You can extend a second chance offer to the next highest bidder.

Sure, one could make a second chance offer to the next-highest bidder - and to other non-winning bidders, if one wished.

I wouldn't do so unless I either (1) had duplicate items available to sell or (2) had some solid reason to believe that the winning bidder was not going to complete the transaction.

If the original winning bidder ultimately does bail on the transaction, then you'll want to go through the unpaid item process to get a refund of the final value fee for the sale.

Lots of losers on ebay. I pay as soon as the auction ends via paypal. Thats why my feedback is 100%.

It's a tough one. I'd be tempted to contact the next bidder. 3 or 4 days and not responding to e-mails is a bit shaky, plus the history.

If you got some bad feedback from it, you do have the option of posting a short defense of your action. Based on his listed history, I don't think future buyers would hold it against you.

What is this "history" to which you're referring?
