Homer, do you like nachos? Do you like football? How about we go back my place and watch football and eat nachos?

Rest in peace.

Thank God President Ford came along when he did. This is what the NY Times had to say about him:
Quote:
...He might have been the nice guy down the street suddenly put in charge of the nation, and if he seemed a bit predictable, he was also safe, reliable and reassuring. He placed no intolerable intellectual or psychological burdens on a weary land, and he lived out a modest philosophy. "The harder you work, the luckier you are," he said once in summarizing his career. "I worked like hell."...
His was a life well lived.

when he pardoned nixon, i was pretty pissed.

but in reading memoirs of various folks of that era, i am convinced that he did it only for the right reasons, and in retrospect it was probably best for the country that he did.

may he rest in peace.

I agree the pardon was the right thing to do. I am sure he anticipated that it would cost him his election, and it did, but he did it anyway. That sort of character is missing in Washington, or among today's politician in a big way.

I am waiting for someone to seriously post the conspiracy thread that his shot as President was payback for his work on the Warren Commission.

An honorable man.
Thank You Mr. President.

That sucks. It would be nice if someone like him ran in 08.

Rest in Peace.

A common sense, regular guy. Too few of them in Congress.

He was the longest living president and has the distinction of being the only President (and Vice President) to never have been elected to either position.

Wasn't his most famous gaffe something about Poland (or maybe Hungary) not being under Communist control? Huh? (Think that was in the '76 campaign?)

Glad the NYT doesn't cotton to intolerable intellectual or psychological burdens being forced upon the citizenry.

of course that is possible. the nixon side i read made a quid quo pro offer (i may not have the right term) of that but ford decided not to see it and ignored it, i believe. i like to believe that ford did it for the reasons he stated.

*** He also pardoned... ***

Well, he extended amnesty to those who fled the country to avoid service or the draft.

So, along w/the pardon for Nixon, thereby pi55ing off the Left and Dems, he also pi55ed off the Right and Conservative by granting amnesty to draft dodgers.

Is there ANY POLITICIAL/STATESMAN that would consider doing anything remotely close to both those decisions now?

Probably not ... and at that time, those decisions weighed much more heavily on him alone, than anything we, ourselves, could ever imagine.

May he rest in peace, and his family be consoled in knowing that we are a better nation because of him.

Respectfully,

NBC National News tonight (Wed) led off their program saying that "all the talk tonight regarding former President Gerald Ford was hinged on one word - decent".

Decent? I turned to my wife after hearing that and told her that sex with here was "decent". Believe me, she didn't take that as a compliment. If I was an ex-President, I wouldn't take that word as a compliment either.

"Decent" as in honorable, honest; not as a value judgment.
Also think in terms of contrast to recent president(s).

Ford is the only president that could have gone to the NFL

Both the Packers and Lions offered him contracts as a center. He decided to go to Yale Law School instead and finished in the top 25% of his class. This is all while he is the boxing coach and an assistant football coach at Yale.

It's really ironic that Ford was the butt of so many Chevy Chase skits on SNL. He was shown as bumbling and uncoordinated.
