chrysler crossfire srt6 facts?

anybody know anything about the above car?

i read that the engine is an amg mercedes with a supercharger. but details are in short supply everywhere i have looked.

i have read several road tests about it and it has generally been treated roughly by the car mags.

in one test, they compared it to the audi tt awd. the crossfire (non srt) beat the audi soundly in all tests of performance including skid pad, slalom, braking and acceleration. the audi won in economy. the road testors basically said we like the audi better because we like the feel of the steering.

i have always liked them, and saw two competing at autocrosses last summer and they were impressive. if finances permit i might consider buying one or something similar like a bmw z coupe.

i am assuming that any suspension upgrades that fit an slk mercedes will fit the crossfire.

comments? sources for info on the amg engine?

I just read somewhere that Mercedes will stop supplying Chrysler with there "old" parts, they don't want to degrade the Mercedes brand.

The BMW Z Coupe will depreciate much, much less than the SRT8 would.

From what I've read, they got the SLK32 engine, minus a little, and all but the most elite Benz tuners can tap into its electronics so tuning above the initial numbers gets tough.
But I cant imagine the base model can compete with the TT in acceleration, maybe way up top. Not to mention the TT usually gets bombed itself. But the ALMS gets a thumbs up, all it has is bigger wheels?? Ask me, you're better off getting those mags for the pictures, and disregard 90% of what they say, if its not a BMW, Nissan or Honda, it loses...

Where did you hear that?

Mercedes is introducing all V6 CDI engines into their Chrysler lineup fairly soon. Mercedes does not want to be a specialized company, they want to mass-produce as quickly, and as profitably as possible like GM and Ford.

yeah, i figured the power is just a chip away. not that 330 instead of 350 hp would be an issue for me.

yeah, the mags seem to have their predujices.

thanks for the comments.

I like the looks of the Crossfire and find the cabin comfortable and the ride is pretty smooth for such a small car. I am not somebody who needs to corner at high speed, though on the interstate I enjoy going 80+ when the conditions are favorable. I am not ignoring the prof driver's opinions, but those guys look for handling attributes at extremes that I am unlikely to approach.

The Crossfire is a car I'm considering when I (sniff) pass my E320 to my next kid as she learns to drive.

the crossfire is no slouch in cornering either. it matches the mini in the road and track slalom speed and is really only beaten by such seriously compromised cars as the lotus seven clones and the lotus elise.

i think the road test guys pan it because it has reciprocating ball steering and doesnt have the immediate response off dead center that rack and pinion has. personally i find the rack and pinion a little too nervous.

the crossfire is 80% mercedes, built in austria. it is hard to find much that is american. the body, wheels and steering wheels perhaps. the chassis engine tranny and rear end is all pure mercedes.

i am hot for one!

the srt6 is a corvette challenger if not beater in a more compact wieldy package.

Hey Tom, have you looked into a Solstice GXP or a Saturn Sky Redline? The naturally aspirated versions of these have been dominating autocross. Very nice stiff chassis and suspension. And 250+ HP (probably underrated) and 2900 lbs means fun. And they're damn cheap, or will be once the hype dies down and the dealers stop adding their market adjustments.

Though it seems you are interested in a coupe, not convertible.
