David Beckham

He just signed a contract with LA Galaxy.
Played for Manu and Real Madrid, former captain of the England squad.
Do you guys know who he is, and his wife?

Trakehner 01-12-2007 07:00 AM

yeah, he's a pretty boy.

Oliverp 01-12-2007 07:14 AM

There was a little debate on UK tv about this today. A lot of people think he's got too much money and the move to LA is the start of his retirement.

Apparantly he's getting $1m a week!

Loads of people were calling in to say it was sick and it's too much money. I think it's great - wish I was paid $1m per week.

Are the LA Galaxy team any good?

We kinda knew what was happening when Beck showed up in Beverly Hills coupla years back looking at homes.

I believe Jurgen Klinsmann also lives in LA.
He didn't accept the job as coach for USA, perhaps he'll join Becks now.

David and Victoria, He is not the best Voetball player, and she is not the most talented Spice Girl, but that name recognition thing is very powerful when it comes to a "brand" as Madison Avenue calls it.

Hopefully this will help further the true world sport. Instead of the girls Rugby the US currently plays.

Becks has a very, very gifted right leg, and also has a great fighting spirit. He won the Champions League trofee with Manu in an unforgettable match against Bayern Munich (two, winning goals in extra time). With Real Madrid, no prizes beside the Spanish national championship. He even lost his place in the England team. He never reached the level of the really outstanding players like Zidane, Platini, Beckenbauer, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Van Basten, etc. At 31, his joining LA Galaxy looks more to do with a new future in glamourland, than revamping his career as a professional footballer, ...err soccer player.

At one stage in his life Beckham could complete all 23 stages of the beep test. He's a gifted athlete as far as VO2max is concerned. He could have been a pretty good runner or cyclist.

Becks is in it for the moolah, pay no mind to this "im doing it for the kids" line.

he was a precocious teen talent, scoring a goal from inside his own half drew attention to him. Yeah, so he's got a decent right foot, but is only good for free kicks and whipping crosses/corners in. "fighting spirit" Vronsky? I beg to differ. Yes he could run and run, monitors often picked him up doing more than seven miles a game (90mins), but he is past it.
He also was the face of a lot of products over here in europeland, most notably Gilette razors, Pepsi and sports wear. He was perceived to be the goldenboy of english soccer, and of course when he married that stick from the Spice Girls, it was every campaign managers dream. Things turned sour for the residents of Beckingham Palace when it came to light that he had been having 'extra training' sessions with a bisexual PA, Rebecca Loos. This caused him to be dropped from some high profile endorsements.

Product managers dream - very possibly

Gay Icon - without doubt

World class footballer ? Eh, that would be a no. A one footed, non heading, tackle shirking metrosexual - yes.

gmercoleza 01-12-2007 10:26 AM

Becks in La La land will be interesting...

450slcguy 01-12-2007 10:35 AM

Just another overpaid athlete in the hyped out world of arm chair sports enthusiasts.

I say good for him, but bad for England. They were like royality there. He may not be the fastest, but he can hit the 90's better than most anyone, and he will pull millions into MLS just on jersey sales alone, heck I might buy one.

One lucky dude.

it'll draw huge amounts of attention to the league due to his celebrity. Will be very good for the league except it'll ultimately kill it as more past prime players get brought over after being lured by the cash. Already Dallas is courting Davids away from Tottenham. It also speculated the fat Brazillian, Ronaldo is on his way over soon.

Read about Davids aswell, and Ronaldo would sure be interested, maybe even Romario... Waterreus is now playing for New York. Seems your league is becoming a semi-retirement home again, like it was in the 80s
