Cool image handling software: AutoStitch

AutoStitch can automagically stitch together a collection of images to generate a panoramic image.

I've played around with it just a little bit; initial results are pretty neat.

Comes free with certain digital cameras. I think Canon is one.

That's the first time I've ever messed with stitching software. Pretty cool.

All I'm playing with is the free downloadable demo.

Do you have any experience using any of the stitching software included free with cameras? I'd be curious to know how they compare to this in terms of capabilities, ease of use, etc.

They are the full versions. I don't know what the limitations of the demo is, but I imagine it's a time-limiting license (use for 30 days), not really a feature limiting license. Sometimes they'll limit the format you can export the image to. What limitations are you seeing?

There's a FAQ at the AutoStitch page that notes a few of the specific limitations of the demo version. They also note that a given demo version may expire at some time, in which case one is advised to download the latest version. It may come to pass that at some point in time no functioning demo version will remain available; I know nothing about it other than what I read on their web page.

Note also that they don't sell their own commercial version as such. They license their technology to others, some of whom offer commercial packages based on that technology.

With AutoStitch, I can shoot at will, not telling the camera in advance that I'm collecting images to be stitched in a particular pattern later. I can take them in a relatively complex two-dimensional matrix (5 rows by 8 columns, for example - I don't know how far I'd have to push it before it would have a problem). I point AutoStitch to the files and turn it loose, and it automagically sorts them out and puts them all together.

I have no personal experience with the software that comes with cameras, so I don't how they would compare.

I think Photoshop has this feature, too. There aren't many features it DOESN'T have. I'm sure the Mistress knows. She uses it all day long.

Speaking of cell phone cameras, how high is the resolution on yours? I think my Treo's is 1.3 megapixels. The first Kodak professional digital camera I sold in the early 90's cost close to $10K and had a 1.3 mp chip in it! The pace of technology is just blistering!

Don't think PS does that, but I'll let the pro come in and let us know for sure.

I'm pretty sure that the latest version of PS doesn't stitch.

thank you Justin. Photoshop does indeed have a stitching program, it's called Photomerge. To access you go to File, Automate, Photomerge and then click open composition. I have Photoshop Creative suite 2.

That explains it, I'm still running PS 7. Only my seat of Illustrator has been upgraded to the newest version. Behind the curve still/again/forever....

And Justin, haven't you noticed that this place is like a house full of dogs? Whenever the doorbell rings, we all bark as if every one of us is in charge of ranch security.

Gonna have to check that out, just as soon as I start taking panoramics.
