On my 87 wagon I kept noticing this odd behavior when driving in the rain. It seemed like when I started the car when the front wipers were already in the on position (parked the car and turned it off while the wipers were running), the rear wiper would make a few swipes and then stop.

I thought there was a short in my dash switch for the wiper or something.

When reading my manual I came across this little tidbit...

The rear wiper will also automatically engage if the windshield wiper is engaged and the transmission selector lever is placed in "R" Reverse.

Well duh, I was always backing out of parking spots or driveways when I noticed this, never would have guessed it was on purpose!
