Neat Thermostat...

Fitting in with my electrical thread... I don't know if anyone has a use for this kind of thing... but it is real handy...

http://www.scillc.com/cem%20series.htm

Basically, it lets you call in and set the temp for a property before you get there.

Great if you have a ski place or something -- keep it around 45 when you're not there so the pipes don't freeze, and then call it before you leave -- and it is warm and toasty when you get there. Especially good for unplanned trips when "setting" the t-stat doesn't work out.

There are also X-10 thermostats (meaning the X-10 protocol, not the annoying pop-up spy cam folks, although they do sell them too) that you can control via telephone, the web, or conditionals programmed into a home automation system. I've built a lot of X-10 functionality into my house, but haven't done the thermostat yet.

$229.

It's a true dial-in one... you can set the temp to a temp, not just bump it up to one "setting".

i used to use fancy set back stats in my house and office. i found that they were problematic. after a few problems with them i replaced them with simple manual everything stats. i set them up or down when i want and they very seldom create a service call or a problem.

the savings in fuel is all lost in one service call in maybe five years. if they last that long.
