Electric car vs Ferrari and Porsche

A little embarrassing perhaps, but I still wouldn’t drive the Energizer Bunny to the clubhouse.

I saw an episode of Top Gear a little while where they were testing that little thing out, they loved it.

I don't really get those rolling take-offs, seemed set up.

The rolling takeoff may have something to do with the way the electric delivers power. It actually may favor the gassers (not favor but level the playing field a little more). With their weight being double that of the electric they are at an accelleration disadvantage already and the rolling start means their mass is already in motion. Power:weight ratio is hard at work here.

Cool vid..

Electric cars are torque monsters. Now if you could have that power in one of the Porsche bodies, that may sell but there is sometning about the sound of a performance gasoline engine that would be missed. I remember when I was in the Grand National Club, there was a car that ran 10.90 through the exhaust. The thing is...when he was blowing away big block, open headers musclecars, you couldn't even hear his car. Didn't seem right but cool nonetheless I guess.....Just a swooooooosh....Grand Nationals are torque monsters too...

That looks like a lot of fun. It looks like the Ariel Atom. I wonder where the batteries are?

The track looks like Sears Point in Sonoma.

This one would be more practical....albeit pricey.

Like BauhnBuster said, electrics (can) have incredible torque. The biggest problem for high performance electrics are 1) having a transmission that will withstand it and 2) getting the power to the ground without just spinning the tires.

Drag-racing electric Post Office truck for anyone interested (he's got a couple other neat conversions, too):

Yeah, 1500 pounds -- imagine what those gas engines would have done in a 1500 pound car.

A better comparison would be the electric car gaining some traction now, I forget the name, whoops, found it, the Tesla.

Transmission? Why do electric cars need those?

Because, typically the motor is not mounted at the wheel. Nobody said that this transmission needed multiple gear ratios.

Not really fare, that electric car probably had two DC motors dircet driving the rear wheels. DC motors produce a ton of torque and power and there is no loss in the driveline.

Its a pointless test two totaly different cars and technoligy.

I'll still take the gas cars, so much cooler.

Hows about the gas powered version of the car...

The Ariel Atom!

Sorry hat, but I would much rather have the Atom. Its cheaper when it breaks, and it handles like a toy!

Also, Infineon raceway was formerly known as Sears Point. The reason for the name change is new ownership.

Street start (5mph) accelerations are always SLOWER than a true 0-60 run. Example:

Quote:
HEFFNER TWIN TURBO LAMBORGHINI GALLARDO

Price as tested: $229,999 (base price*: $229,999)
Engine type: twin-turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 40-valve V-10, aluminum block and heads, port fuel injection
Displacement: 303 cu in, 4,961cc
Power (mfr’s claim): 700 bhp @ 7900 rpm
Torque (mfr’s claim): 505 lb-ft @ 6600 rpm
Transmission: 6-speed manual
Wheelbase: 100.8 in
Length/width/height: 169.3/74.8/45.9 in
Curb weight: 3,575 lb
Zero to 60 mph: 3.1 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 7.5 sec
Zero to 150 mph: 15.5 sec
Zero to 170 mph: 19.2 sec
Street start, 5–60 mph: 4.5 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 11.4 sec @ 129 mph
Braking, 70–0 mph: 168 ft
Roadholding, 300-ft-dia skidpad: 0.93 g
*Base price includes all performance-enhancing options.
I vote for the race being setup. The races were already pretty close, they just needed that extra advantage to show off their car.
