Boston/Cartoon Network ad campaign uproar

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/02/01/boston.bombscare/index.html

OK, I don't think I have EVER said this before... But today, I am officially embarrassed to be an American.

This is probably the most ludicrous, paranoid, and embarrassing thing to happen in US public life and media since 9-11.

The uproar over the devices used in this harmless (and also quite interesting and original, I must say!) ad campaign is ridiculous and would quite frankly be hilarious, if it didn't have such serious implications.

The small, lighted advertising devices look more like an old "LiteBrite" toy
(http://www.toysrus.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=Lite%20Brite&origkw=Lite%20Brite&f=Taxonomy/TRUS/2254197&cid=) than anything!....

They HARDLY look like an IED or other type of "bomb", as authorities in Boston and elsewhere are claiming. Hell, the things have been placed in major cities all over the US for TWO WEEKS, and NOW all of a sudden it's a "security crisis"?!?!

The terrorists have now OFFICIALLY succeeded. They have us chasing our own tails, afraid of our own shadows... Which is exactly what they hoped to accomplish.

Congratulations, Boston.

Mike

I heard about this on the radio and didn't want to believe it. But it doesn't surprise me.

"it had a battery behind it and wires" Love it.

Lame just got a new definition. But I bet Turners sitting there laughing his a** off about all the buzz he just got. Reeling them in. I hope the movie makes like hundreds of millions of dollars. Theres one on ebay for like 5 grand! They're pretty cool, I wish they put them up here.

Yep.

That is also what my daughter said when in a recent trip to Santa Fe, NM, they confiscated a tube of toothpaste from her carry-on. It was Tom's of Maine and it was brand new. She was upset...I had to calm her down before it got worse!

It is so much fun to travel by air nowadays...NOT!

No kidding.

What we here can’t understand is why all the freak over these little ads. Sure they have a little blinking light. So what? Freak and think it’s an IED? Geeze.......

I figure every TV owning American knows that our soldiers over there in Iraq are nervous of every box or bag of trash left on the road side. God forbid that (legitimate there, mind you) kind of thinking takes effect here.

Hmmmm.....
But then.......The traffic would be nill....... And maybe someone would keep the highways cleaner. (insert smilie w/ lightbulb here)

Maybe we should all jump into this BS mind set, and start calling in every box and/or bag of trash we see on the roadsides!!

YepX2.

Every new 'security' measure that I see enforced makes me shake my head in disgust. A comparatively small handful of people - the terrorists - have essentially manipulated the lives of all the citizens of the greatest nation in the world. From confiscating personal items, to passport requirements, to crap like this. Sad days indeed.

Canadian passport offices have been working overtime trying to keep up with demands since the new air travel restriction laws came into effect in January. I know people who have had to cancel travel plans due to the backlog.

The worst part is that I don't see the laws actually accomplishing anything. Smart and funded terrorists will understand and adapt to the new laws, and circumvent them as they did before.

Was watching Adult Swim last night and prior to start, Cartoon Network put out a formal explanation and apology about the ad ploy.

Maybe Bostonians don't watch "Aqua Teen Hunger Force". The odd-shaped objects was one of the bitmap characters on the show!

Oh well. A certain fellow named Orson Wells managed to get Americans believing in aliens with just an ordinary radio play! We all scoffed at how ignorant our grandfathers were to fall for that!

I guess history repeats itself...

why fly when you can drive a Benz. The only thing I found distressing about "LightGate" was the fact the little guy was shooting a bird...not a good message to be sending...I wonder what they would do with Etcha Sketches straticially placed in public for people to use...

Really? What does an IED look like? Do they generally look like those black balls with the fuse sticking out like Boris Badenov used to throw at Rocky and Bullwinkle?

I don't know what the Boston authorities should have done in this case, but I don't envy them. They have a tough job.

Yep. I would like to see a show of hands of how many people have been to the FBI museum in DC and seen all of the teddy bears, ect.....that they have found bombs in. Anyone?
