Check List For Purchasing Used Wave Runner
I know lots of you know lots of things.
Can anyone help with a checklist to confirm the purchase of a used waverunner. It is a Yahama 2004, 700cc Waverunner. Thanks Iggy |
I don't know much about jet ski's per say, but a boats a boat. Look at the hull for cracks and chunks taken out of it, general condition. As for the engine I have no idea. The jet drive itself is simple enough, you would have to try to really hurt the impeller. I'd have a dealer go through the engine.
Be CAREFULL!!!!! People beat these things without mercy! I have seen them flipped, crashed, run without oil, sunk, burned, frozen, run out of water until the engine burned up, hmmm thats about it. For some reason people treat them like a disposable toy, or the owners are just clueless, or the owners are 12 and just don't give a crap. I don't think I could bring myself to buy a used one unless I knew the owner. |
The owner is someone from my office. Though, I never trust anyone any further than I can throw them, and I am a small guy!
Issue is, I moved 7 months ago to a beautiful lake here outside Guatemala City. Lots of water activity and new these things here are between 8-10K US$. Do not want to spend that much on something that I will only use on the weekends. What I am more inquireing about, is what is expensive to change on these things. Simple mecanics, I can do or have done here at a real cheap labor cost. Iggy |
Most of the parts can be found on ebay cheaper than a dealer. You can buy a repair manual right from the dealer for less than 100 bucks.
Try starting it after it has not been started for a while. If it starts right up, take it for a spin. Throttle response should be sharp. Throw it around a bit. It should not bog down at all. Does it have a speedometer -if so, make sure it reaches close to the specified top speed for that ski. Then shut it down, lift the seat look for leaks in the hull - should be none. Then put the seat back on and start it again, while the engine is still hot. If she starts right up and still has sharp throttle repsonse, I'd say you should buy it, if the price is right. |
Is there any way you can have a tech go thru it for a few bucks? I did that.

Yes. There is a tech looking at it tomorrow. Problem is. The tech is from the same shop that has given service to the wave from the original owner. I live in a place, where there are only one or two and the second is the dealership, which subcontracts to this person lots, that is really good on these types of crafts. So to a certain extent I need to take what he may say with a grain of salt.
The thing has been used, the motor looks in great condition and the price is good. Lets see what the tech says tomorrow. Iggy |
do a compression test.if the cyls are not within about 10% of each other walk away.2 strokes like to take out crank seals then they run lean and burn holes in the pistons.
