Point of an ML 63?

I saw an ML 63 (the AMG--maybe I read the #s wrong) going after a Porsche Cayanne (turbo) and vice versa yesterday, and had to wonder--what is the point? My wife agreed that the AMG ML looks like any other minivan. The vehicles are equally worthless as four wheel drives (except snow and desert driving maybe), but at least the Porsche is good looking. How much are the ML 63s?

John Doe 02-07-2007 11:57 AM

Your car is an attractive sedan--the ML looks like an egg on wheels. Plus the guy driving it appeared to have some gender confusion issues which may have clouded my judgment.....(actually the Porsche driver did too).

I have driven the srt 8 and it was one of the fastest cars I have ever driven in a straight line--but not really fun to drive to me. Same with the clunky Corvettes and Vipers. If I get another go fast car it will likely be another porsche.

G-Benz 02-07-2007 12:05 PM

I'm trading up...

...cause I need to get to the kid's soccer games...DAMN FAST! :helmet:

John Doe 02-07-2007 12:09 PM

I guess my post may be a little insulting to ML owners here--sorry G:o They just don't look like "Mercedes" to me. But Ted is right--to each his own for sure!!

One positive thing I can say about that 63 was the HUGE disks all around it. They looked badass.

iwrock 02-07-2007 12:12 PM

Huh...

I like the ML. Just wish they had brought over a diesel.

Yeah I have seen several.

iwrock 02-07-2007 12:26 PM

I have seen zero over here in California...

Oh well. I have the G500 to make up for it. Built like a brick *****house. Gotta love it.

Most of us know this, but there maybe a few that don't...

The M-class is assembled in Alabama.
The engines and trannys come from Germany.
However, 65% of the vehicle content comes from the NAFTA region.:P (hmmm?i ncluding your local Chrysler plant?)

I thought Calif. and MA couldn't have the CDIs because of emissions? Could be wrong.

Just out of curiosity are the 600 and G yours or maybe your parents? That is a pretty impressive stable for a college student if they are yours!!

TheDon 02-07-2007 01:08 PM

Cali will have the new diesels with the AdBlue Bluetecs.... ya know with the urea injection or w/e they use

Kuan 02-07-2007 01:36 PM

Obviously you didn't look at the AMG specs. You cannot get Napa leather on the standard non-AMG models. Don't you get it? Jeez... people these days.

John Doe 02-07-2007 01:53 PM

That sailed over my head Kuan:dizzy2:

Kuan 02-07-2007 02:06 PM

The POINT... is, the point in getting the AMG is for the Napa leather.

Do I have to explain everything? You are obviously not a soccer mom. Do I have to tell you the proper way to dangle your celphone too?

:D I get it now. I don't think the owner of this AMG is gonna have kids unless he and his partner adopt though.

You show me how to dangle, because at least three-four times a year, I throw a cellphone out of the window of my car in anger.:o

Maybe it is like the nappy leather Rick james had in his hooptie.

Whatever you do, please don't go out and get a drop top. :)

Sorry dude, been looking for several months and should be in one by March.;)

iwrock 02-07-2007 02:33 PM

Hehehe....

I would list they they are my mother and fathers daily drivers, however I ran out of characters, as there is a limit to the amount of characters you can have for a siggy.

But indeed they are my parents. That doesn't mean that I cannot drive them though. :D

The G is cool, as it turns mucho heads!

It does makes me look like a drug dealer.....

John Doe 02-07-2007 02:38 PM

Thats cool. I came very close to buying a Gwagon after having looked for almost a year, and my wife decided they had gone the way of the gangsta, so we killed that idea. I still may buy a beat up G280 D if I ever come across one again. Saw one advertised in Oregon a while back, but it had snuck over from Canada and had all sorts of legal issues that needed attention. An '85 I think it was.

Hatterasguy 02-07-2007 02:42 PM

No offense to ML owners but I always thought they looked like a minivan and were blah.

The ML55/63 is for soccer moms that need to get there kids to pracatice RIGHT NOW!!!!:D

The G55 is far cooler but it costs more and is a real truck.

Where I live it is the ultimate in ghetto, stupid 24" spinner chrome, rapper, football player crap:mad: I had my heart set on it too, and was sooooo close.

I can also say that I won't be buying (if I could) a Bentley anytime soon either, because they are the G ride of choice now too.

Hatterasguy 02-07-2007 03:03 PM

Well its the football players that ruin it. The Russian mob loves them...

iwrock 02-07-2007 03:44 PM

But then there are working class people like my family that own a G because of a few damn good reasons.

1)Depreciation
2)Rarity
3)Class
4)Fun-ness
5)Ride
6)The Look
7)Cause they are actually affordable now!

Oh, and it pulls the boat like nothing else. The ML had some problems pulling the boat up steep ramps. This baby shouldnt have a problem...

John Doe 02-07-2007 03:47 PM

Don't get me wrong--I still want one, but the wife doesn't want to drive one, so it would be a little pointless to get it 'cause I like my wife:D

Don't kid yourself on the towing though---only rated for 7K# and no factory transmission cooler.

Kuan 02-07-2007 03:57 PM

Man I'd like one, a G-wagen, but any car that requires me to stand on a stepstool to secure my boat is out of the question.

iwrock 02-07-2007 04:06 PM

Hehehe....

My dad wanted a G wagon since he saw one wayyyy back in the day. (My dads in his late 50s.) Anyways, he loved the ML, and it was a great runner!

My mom was cool with th idea of my dad adding another car to the fleet, as long as one disappeared. Well, he was about to trade in his 600, but my mom said no to that, as it his baby! So, my mom made the deal that he could get a G as long as it was to be her car. Well, my dad bought it for my mom, but he drives it more than she does.... But its cool. My mom likes driving it, as shes up off the ground, and it feels like a REALLY safe vehicle. She doesnt care that its not the fastest brick on the road, but she is really happy with it. She loves how it rides, and how it handles. She also like the layout of it, so shes cool with it! Oh, and my dad says that my mom looks cute when she drives it.... Maybe you can pull that one on your wife Mr. Doe...

The problem is that my dad is my dad likes to steal it when its not in use... Oh well. Just means that my mom can drop the top on the SL, and cruise all day long. She likes driving that car too. She thinks its got too much power though. She doesnt mind it though, she loves how the car looks.

iwrock 02-07-2007 04:08 PM

Ours looks exactly like this.

Same idea as the original post... Whats the point?

Nah dude, you open the doors and stand on the floor. That is what I have to do to tie down my sailboards and canoe to my Jeep.

John Doe 02-07-2007 04:15 PM

Your parents sound very cool, Justin. I could get the thing if I wanted it, but was actually kind of excited that my wife was the one that really wanted to get it and now she has lost interest.

The point of a Gwagon for me would be that I use 4 wheel drive a lot during the winter. That AMG Egg mobile would be fairly useless where I would need it.

POS 02-07-2007 11:10 PM

My brother-in-law has the ML55 - pointless as heck, but unbelievably fun to drive. A car that large shouldn't be able to do the things that the ML can do.

t walgamuth 02-07-2007 11:32 PM

when the first ml came out i really wanted one.

i mentioned it to my wife and she said "it looks like a mini van" and then "i thought you hate mini vans".

course she loves that dimwit pt cruiser!

Hahahahha!!!!

Thats cool though. She found something she likes.

t walgamuth 02-08-2007 08:27 AM

i would like a g wagen maybe if i could find one with a good diesel and stick tranny.

those with big v8 and mega leather and gadgets don't appeal to this ol' farm boy at heart.

rumbly diesels and stick trannys are for work. work is good.

CT is not on the list, but MA, NH and VT are. CDIs are legal to be sold in CT.

AND I got an email from MB of North Haven a few weeks ago that they are getting one of the first newly produced G Wagon CDIs in next week.......but when I emailed back with a request for the price, I got the we'll see about demand. I can't believe it wasn't presold.

Is it a G or a GL? GL's are like a bloated ML.

They are a top notch dealer, I have never delt with the sales side. But the parts and service side is first rate. They always seem to have at least one or two E320CDI's in stock.

That must be a relatively new developement because as recently as last year you could not purchase a new VW TDI in the state (I was looking for a Jetta wagon). They could sell you any used diesel with over 7000 miles on it, but any less than that or new they couldn't.

I know the Blue-Tecs are supposed to be CA emissions (thus NY, MA and CT) legal, but I didn't realize that some of the CDI's must be. Although with the G Wagon it might very well be through a light truck exemption.

I'm hoping to get my hands on a diesel Honda Odyssey for the wife when they finally make them. Maybe there's some hope!
