Legality of charging your credit card ahead of time
So I reserved a hotel room for three nights. They charged my CC a month ahead of time. Is that legal?

Did they actually charge it?
I know that when I make hotel reservations they don't actually charge it until I actually check out (I have looked at my cc statement to confirm it). Maybe some hotel chains have changed policies.

Some discount travel operations like Expedia do that I think. Their deals are non-cancelable. Anybody know for sure?

When i booked my flight and hotel for Hawaii two years back I made my reservations on a credit card and paid for it 6 months in advance. Now, if you have to change anything they will refund the money and charge a small fee for their change....

Depends.
"Special Orders" -- Custom work that is exclusively made for you has different rules as per Merchant Agreements and the Law... compared to if you buy something that can be resold to anyone. In your case, travel -- you would have to read the fine print, then contact your States Banking Department and go from there. In most cases, the general answer is, No. It is not legal to charge your card until you either use the service or the item has left the company (shipped)... |

Wanted to add... don't really worry too much you can simply dispute the charges (within a set number of days) if there are issues. 99% of the time the card-holder wins the dispute.

Yes, I've found a dispute like that often works better than trying to deal directly with the merchant. Microsoft is a good example.
I once had an MSN account and they screwed up my billing royally. Getting through to someone to resolve the proble was impossible. As soon as I called VISA to dispute the charges, they had someone from Microsoft on the line within seconds!

Well I booked the hotel in my name, but then a friend wants to pay for it. The dang hotel is being a pain, pretending that it's too much work or something. It's just annoying. I don't wanna pay the interest on a thousand bucks.
