My understanding is that, yes, it is possible, but the engineering gets crazy. The elevator issue is just one problem. Another is the piping and wiring you need. Then you get into the structure itself. How thich and how strong does it have to be to support its own weight to those heights. Even if the walls were paper thin, a mile of paper weighs a lot. The HVAC issues are another big deal. Imagine the cooling towers to keep that place cool.

i can visualize ways to handle the hvac. the exiting seems kindof insurmountable.
i mean really, i think they had a lot of trouble getting some of the less mobile folks out of the world trade and it was a mere 100 stories or so. what you going to do, allow only marathoners on the upper floors? leaves a pretty thin market. imho. tom w |

in an urban setting the landings could get dicey fast with a couple of hundred thousand folks bailing out!
