Senator John Warner, a true public servant, has decided to retire at the conclusion of his term in January 2009.

That is the Senate's loss -- and the nation's loss. The man had guts and integrity, and I was proud to call him my Senator when I lived in Virginia.
There are fewer and fewer old school statesmen like Warner in the Senate. There used to be plenty of them. And I am underwhelmed by the current crop (with some exceptions), who are largely narrow and partisan and craven to special interests. And, yes, Larry Craig is very much the opposite of Senator Warner in style and substance. -- Bokonon
