Why are the wings bent up ?
Flew in on a 737-700 tonight and each wing had about 7 or 8 feet of the end bent up at 90 degrees. Anyone know why they do this ?

Think it's to facilitate tighter turns/lower speed turns without stalling out.

The winglets are there to minimize and re-deploy the wingtip vortices which lowers drag, improves airflow over the tail surfaces, and improves slipstream which improves fuel consumption...

Someone took the plane to Earl Scheib for repairs.

They do have outstanding emergency row exit seating on the port side. At 6'3" I was able to fully extend my legs and barely get to the seat in front of me. Great for a flight from Hartford to Anaheim! On the other side though they've go some whacky, staggered removable row of seats so only one of the three has any legroom.

Tried to squeeze the plane into the hanger without opening the doors all the way.

I read the B737 winglet information link. The most interesting comment was as follows:
MODERN DRAMATIC APPEARANCE Blended Winglets bring a modern look and feel to aircraft, and improve customers' perceptions of the reliability and modernity of the Airline.

Take a guess at the age of this PA-31. The 4-blade/Q-tip prop mod and winglets were added just a few years ago. It looks pretty modern. Pretty clean. New. Fast. Reliable. Etc. The aircraft itself was made in 1978.

Would stickers on the outside of the plane make it go faster? Make people feel more confident about the plane?
I can see it now, an old Spitfire or an old P38 with winglets and shiny new prop blades....

More correctly they're called...
Whitcomb winglets.
Named after Dr. Richard Whitcomb who refined the winglet concept in the 1970s. Whitcomb is also responsible for the Area Rule; a neat piece of mathmetical work applied to aeronautical design that enables supersonic aircraft to operate more efficiently at or beyond the speed of sound.
