How hard is it to change a coil pack on a '97 Expedition? Tools needed?

Piece of cake. Last time I pulled one it was just 4 bolts on each corner, one connector and ignition wires. Make sure you mark the ignition wires so they go back in the right order. Small socket set and streight blade screwdriver (for removing connector) are the only tools needed. You may also want to buy some silicone dielectric to re-lube the boots and connector seal.

Is your engine the 4.6, with the two-coil EDIS system, or the 5.4 with eight individual coil packs each serving a cylinder? If you need more info, you should hit www.ford-trucks.com and check out their F-150 or Expedition message boards. Hopefully, if it's the 5.4, the coil in question is located on one of the more forward plugs, as the rearmost cylinders are a superb pain in the ass to deal with from an accessibility perspective.

BTW, on 5.4's, the #4 coil pack (passenger side allll the way back) is notorious for shorting out, particularly on the earliest Expeditions, due to leaky heater hoses dripping antifreeze onto the coil. Later heater hoses (including current replacement hoses from Ford) are better designed and less likely to leak.

I'm actually a member at the ford site and I have it posted there, but nobody is as quick as you guys. After the last two coils blew (over 100k miles) I bought a scan tool so I could do it myself. yes, it is the 5.4L and YES, the #4 coil pack blew. Wish me luck.

I would spend the cash (it's not pretty) and change out the upper heater hose (the one with the "T")as well, if it's the old version. Good chance that an antifreeze leak put you into this situation. Believe me, you don't want to change #4 twice.

It is done. It actually wasn't as bad as I thought. I did it in the wife's work parking lot in about 20 minutes. I couldn't get the rubber boot out of the hole so I left it in and just replace the coil pack. I was afraid of tearing the rubber and then being in real trouble trying to get the rest of it out.

Thanks guys.

So, I pissed off the guys at the Ford site. I asked over there if any tools are needed to change the coil pack. So 2 days later my thread has no answers and it is almost on the second page. MEANWHILE, I posted here and had an answer in a few hours. I went back and jokingly (although they didn't know that) told them they suck. Some douche even wanted my thread pulled. I just thought it was funny.
