The Automat is coming back to New York!

Being a history buff, especially interested in 1920's and 1930's America, I always thought the elegance and Art Deco styling of the old Horn and Hardart's automats was very interesting; marble counters, and food displayed like museum pieces. Well they are coming back!

On the front window of the Bamn automat in the East Village, there is a guide on how to purchase food there. Though most restaurants don't require instructions, it's probably a good idea to memorize these before the restaurant opens in a few weeks, since many New Yorkers are too young to have dined at an automat. So, here's how it works: insert coins, retrieve food from behind a glass panel, and dig in.

Though St. Mark's Place revelers may not remember it, the automat has a long history in New York. Joe Horn and Frank Hardart's coin-operated automats were the fast food of the early 20th century, offering hearty dishes like beef and noodles in burgundy sauce, chicken pot-pie, and mashed turnips. After buying dishes of hot food from individualized compartments, customers ate together in large cafeterias. At the automat's peak in the 1950s, there were 180 restaurants in New York and Philadelphia, at one point feeding more than 800,000 people a day

I went a few times with my parents when I was a kid. My memory is the baked macaroni and franks & beans were the best. Can't remember prices, but my guess was about $.75.

Now you'd have to go with one of those change machines hanging off your belt, like being a Good Humor man.

Side note: There was a Nathan's near my high school where we could walk to for lunch (if you had 2 periods in a row off). Two hot dogs, fries & soda, and change back from a buck. Best french fries in the world, IMHO.

I see they are now national & international - 10 in Japan & 8 in Kuwait. I wonder if the fries are still good.

This was the original one in Coney Island. Mine may have been #2. http://www.nathansfamous.com/nathans/inside/htmls/postcard1.php

Reminds me of the local deli, Leggios, near the high school. Easy to get a hero over one period. $.65 for a ham or turkey..........or, if you really wanted to splurge.........$.85 for roast beef.

This was for a terrific full sized hero with the works........you'd pay $7.00 for it today.

I remember the Automats! I first experienced one when I was eight. We were visiting my aunt and uncle, who lived in NYC at the time. I was from a rural area of NC and thought the Automat was the coolest thing I had ever seen.

Those are still very common in Holland, you will find them at fast food places, it's one of those things that I miss when I'm home sick.

When we were drunk my buddy and I would take out a deep fried drum stick, take one bite and put it back in making sure you could not see the bite and wait for the next drunk to take it out...

I have never seen one, but I have heard of them. If I am ever by their and need food I'll be sure to give it a try. Wonder if they take credit cards these days? Putting $7-$10 worth of quarters in would suck...

We had similar experiences while working in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. My colleague liked the fried meat-mush with mystery sauce. I preferred the smoked eel sandwiches.
