Mb B200

I just joined this discussion group this afternoon and was wondering if there are any other B200 owners in the US.

I got a B200T last fall and it is the most fun car I've ever had. I've gotten over 32 mph on the highway too...can't beat that.

Zeus 03-29-2007 07:50 PM

Welcome to the forums!

32mph on the highway? You should be posting in the Performance Paddock! :P ;)

32mpg is an impressive mileage, to be sure. I'm on the other end of the spectrum, unfortunately...;)

Plenty of great folks here, lots of excellent information, this open discussion forum can warrant a thick skin from time to time though!

If you mean a B class? Surely 32mpg is not all that great? My Kia Rio get's 31 and my 240D was getting 31 before winter diesel hit. I thought B classes were light enough to be more economical than that?

CA-B200 03-30-2007 12:51 PM

Yup, B Class. Gas not diesel turbo.

iwrock 03-30-2007 01:08 PM

Whoa, where are you, and how did you get that?? My dad and I want either an A Class or a B Class, but you cant get them anywhere....

Its cool though, as my dad is going to be one of the first people in our area to get a SMART!!!

CA-B200 03-30-2007 01:25 PM

I'm in Southern Calif. Got it from a MB dealership in BC. I had to work around the Calif. emmissions law (no reason to make it a Calif car if it's not going to be sold in the US) so I had to get one with at least 7,500 miles on it.

CA-B200 03-30-2007 01:32 PM

OK - as soon as I get back to my own computer...I think I have at least one on it.

Hope this works...

TheDon 03-30-2007 05:21 PM

Id drive it

iwrock 03-30-2007 05:39 PM

I would sooo totally drive that! How hard was it to get into Cali? Any major mods done to make it legal?

If you dont mind, how much did it cost in the end?

CA-B200 03-30-2007 06:36 PM

It is not a "Calif" car so I had to bring in a used one (at least 7,500 miles). DMV told me that as long as it could pass smog and it met US safety standards I could register it.

Canada's bumper standards are higher than US so that was no problem. I think their emissions standards are higher too.

My insurance company said that as long as I could register it they would insure it.

Downgrades to a two year 24K warranty.

I did not have to pay Canada's taxes but I did have to pay the Calif sales tax when I registered it.

The warranty reverted to the US warranty when I brought it in. Canada's is a little better. Wear and tear is covered for two years up there.

I did not have to pay Canada's taxes but I did have to pay the Calif use fee (yeah right - it's really the local sales tax) when I registered it.

With all the fees, taxes, shipping etc. the entire thing came to $35K.

That's a cool little car! I like it!

Yeah, you are right about the bumper, emissions, etc. from Canada. I've looked into bringing a nice, clean southern US car into Canada and - forget it. Too many mods required - $$$. :(

Enjoy the ride!

2.5Turbo 04-01-2007 12:55 AM

Betcha with a CDI it would get 40+mpg. My '90 300D 2.5T gets 32+ on the highway.

Carleton Hughes 04-01-2007 01:03 AM

Damn fine mileage and you are to be congratulated upon your diligence in getting the car into the states, best'O luck with it.

t walgamuth 04-01-2007 08:28 AM

ditto.

cool looking car.

omg its a minivan.....

AustinsCE 04-19-2007 06:07 PM

I'd like more info on that registration process. I don't want to wait another 8 years for my Lancia Delta. What DMV was it, I need to go there and tell them to tell me what they told you!

You must be the lady that I spoke to in the parking lot in Chino in front of the book store.

I see you found the forum that I recommended.

Do you remember me? :)

Here is a link for the B-Class on MB Canada's site. You just may get it in the US. Ernst Lieb, now president of MBUSA, was president of MB Canada and is a big fan of the B Class and he pushed really hard to bring them into Canada.

Here is the DMV link. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/fast_facts/ffvr29.htm
I spoke to the Technical Compliance Section of the DMV at (916) 657-6795. Actually I spoke three different times to three different people and got three different answers. I even had the dealer talk to them just to make sure that I could do this.

2008 update - It looks like NHTSA rules have changed so importing a B or several other cars may not be possible for now.

Bottom line is - Will it pass a smog check and does it meet US safety standards? Canada's safety standards are stricter (registering a US car in Canada can be very expensive). Canada's smog standards are quite high as well - well they are in BC, I don't know about the rest of the nation.

Good luck!

Yes, they are strict in all the provinces. ;) Rules just got tougher as well. If you fail emissions, you now have to pay more to try and fix it and there has also been a new levy imposed on new vehicles that have a high mileage rating (gas-guzzler tax effectively).

You're right about the resigistering a US car in Canada - forget it. :(

Anyway, great car! I saw one today actually. Lots of Smart cars around as well.

Stationwagon

suginami 05-02-2007 06:24 PM

Having seen the car in person, I think it is more correct to describe it as a car based (unitized chassis) cross-over vehicle, in the same class of cars as the Lexus RX330, Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, etc.

Enter "mercedes b200" in Google Images. Lotsa pics.
