So this piece of wood hits me in the leg...

Semi-Medical question until I stop being stupid and go to the doctor...

Last week, Friday -- I slam a piece of wood into my leg. I end up with a nasty bump and a wicked black-and-blue.

Walking hurts a little, but I have a high tolerance for pain - so it may hurt more than I think. I limp.

Location: Midway on the lower leg approximately 2cm below the shin, slightly toward the inside of the leg.

Current Status: The swelling has gone down, and the black-and-blue is not as dark -- however, the overall area that is black-and-blue appears to have gotten larger, but again, not as dark as it was (so we traded smaller and really dark for lighter and larger).

NOW HERE'S THE QUESTION: Below the inside of of my foot, below the ankle there is now black-and-blue. This appear yesterday morning, and is nowhere near the area where the wood slammed me. Is this normal? Is this the blood "settling" or something to that effect?

Disclaimer: I know I should go to the doctor, and I **AM** -- but I would like to know if I should go in 15 minutes or if I can go in a day.

Thanks folks,

Pete

Can you stand upon your toes and flex your foot without any referred or direct pain? One,but not the only signs of a blood clot is intense pain when either moving the foot or palpating the surrounding tissue.

Could well be a simple hematoma but at this juncture just hie thee to a doctor if only for peace of mind.

Let me add you should take plenty of aspirin as an anti-coagulant in the event it may be a clot!!!!

i had this happen with a wood splitting incident. i had a knot as big as my knee. then later the dark ankle thing. when the ankle got dark i went to the doc. he said all was normal and sent me home.

i am not advising you to not go to the doc.

Yeah, I have the knot as big as my knee -- that is now just about gone... it was like a person took a grapefruit, cut it in half and stuck it on the side of my shin.

Ugh. Well... I'm thinking I may put this health-insurance plan to work...

Thanks!

Can I just say how thankful I am to be on this forum? Seriously... I know you guys aren't doctors or anything, and in the end, it is up to me what to do -- but the fact that you guys would take this kid of time to chime-in and offer help is very kind. Just wanted to say I appreciate it.

Thanks,

Pete

When in doubt as to being able to wait or to go right away, I vote go right away. While many on this board have driven past some of the finest medical schools this country offers, it's unlikely that I will ever go to Carleton's or Tom's house for an appendectomy, unless of course they can provide a rather good single-malt anesthesia.

Still...with the membership count as of late...there is a pretty good chance if someone initiates a thread of some seemingly "unique" experience, many here will share their identical experience that occurred earlier in their lifetime.

Like the "kidney stone" thread...someone posts about their first and current experience on the same day my body decides to pass one!

Like the mechanical advice folks give on this forum, its just to relay experiences and advice based on experience. It's up to the poster to take all of it, digest, and draw their own conclusions.

This forum is certainly no place to make medical, financial, or and critical life decisions based on posts! At best, it's a barometer to gauge opinions and expectations of what may lie ahead with the situation at hand. That's it.

That said, I saved a ton on my car repairs by switching to MercedesShop!

Diesel Doctor

Diesel. Doctor. Close enough. Both have six letters.

If you are over 45-50, esp. if you are overweight, have diabetes or a family history of diabetes, I would go see a doctor.

Under 40, not overweight -- not diabetes or history of.
