Dunno how much it cost (I can find out easily enough) but a colleague has a PDA/phone/GPS loaded with Tom-Tom that impressed the crap out of me. It found a great route from NE Arkansas to S. Louisiana and provided excellent, flawless directions. One bonus was you could choose John Cleese as the voice giving directions.

Just put the sucker on the dash, set waypoints, and off you go.

I know Garmin makes some in that price range. Love my Nuvi 660, but the price is a bit higher. Garmin seems to be the leader is routing you from the reports I have read, and that is what separates the companys who do the GPS thing.

I've been reading about the Tomtom. $299? I bet it has more than I need. My kid is still three, I can't afford a PDA yet. The last one I had... well.

There are tons of PDA phones that are GPS enabled for much less than $300, what cell service do you have?

Or

Buy a used pda on ebay and a GPS puck.

I have a Garmin Streetpilot (older model) which I used in Europe after purchasing it on Ebay from a German motorcyclist. The main reason I purchased on Ebay was that I discovered that Garmin's have either European or North American base maps built in. You cannot (could not?) purchase the European version in the US or vice versa. Given the amount of world travelling that people do nowadays, this practice seems odd.
So, if you plan on travelling widely with the GPS, see if someone sells a world model.

I moved up to the Tom Tom 900. This being my second TT. Very impressed with a couple of features. Blue Tooth enabled connects with cell, hands free phone calls, connects with ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) for traffic. Displays text messages. It's also portable so you can set to walking or on a bike a navigate a city on foot. Upgradable forever via USB cable included.

Just bought a Garmin Nuvi 350 on Amazon.com. $379. Totally satisfied -- most of the features of the more expensive Garmins and works really well -- the iPod of portable GPS units.

We just switched from Trimble to Garmin in our Cessna 185. It's no more accurate but the display and controls are far better. I don't know the unit but can find out.

We are also getting some kind of subscription gizmo that will do automatic flight-following, if I remember correctly. It will squirt weather current maps to the display, too. The weather is supposed to be tied to the GPS coordinates. I ain't no pilot so I'll have to ask for details if you're interested in this.
