Aesthetics, Kant, Joshua Bell, and Bach's Chaconne

A modern test of an old epistemological hypothesis. It's a bloody long article with optional video.

I applied for a place in an NEH Summer Seminar on the Aesthetics of the Scottish Enlightenment, lead by Paul Guyer who is quoted in the article. I got my rejection letter last weekend. Bummer.

Highly competitive. I knew my chances were low but I was still disappointed.

I read the article yesterday, very interesting. It seems the children in tow behind parents were the most compelled to stop, or want to stop, and watch.

Quoted:
There was no ethnic or demographic pattern to distinguish the people who stayed to watch Bell, or the ones who gave money, from that vast majority who hurried on past, unheeding. Whites, blacks and Asians, young and old, men and women, were represented in all three groups. But the behavior of one demographic remained absolutely consistent. Every single time a child walked past, he or she tried to stop and watch. And every single time, a parent scooted the kid away.

The kids knew

Hmmmmmmmm..................

Playboy models only exist in our dualistic world, not the world of reality-- of thus. They don't really exist, so not to worry.

From the article is this explanation of why the kids knew: "The poet Billy Collins once laughingly observed that all babies are born with a knowledge of poetry, because the lub-dub of the mother's heartbeat is in iambic meter. Then, Collins said, life slowly starts to choke the poetry out of us. It may be true with music, too."

Mark

The connection is weak. Barely a thread.

More an image I have in my head of these guys who have recognized something great and they are trying to foist it off on somebody who is running late to make the coffee and on a lifelong diet of creulers, Billy Joel and Elton John, spoonfed by DC AM jocks... and then end up feeling snubed because nobody gives a sith. Like the pretty girl who, watching a parade, thinks nobody likes her because they don't stop to say hello.

On my way to work in the morning, I don't have time to pull over and give someone a jump start, let alone read some chapter of iluminating literature.
