89 mustang, madison WI... Anyone willing to take a peek?

Allright, my friend's looking for a cheap car. He wants RWD, stick, cheap opperating costs, and reilable.

My uncle has an 83.5 convertable, but it's a garage queen (VERY NICE LITTLE RED CONVERT!!!) so I cant really call into reliablilty on something like that...

here's the craigslist posting
http://madison.craigslist.org/car/298993697.html

It seems to be an good car for $600... He knows it's not perfect, but since it's so far away, he kinda wants somebody to take a look at it for him before hand. MORE THEN WILLING to pay somebody for their time and opinion on it... Not sure exactly what, but his 92 corolla ate it's differencial (we think... havent looked at it close), and he needs a car ASAP

Anyways, other then the obvious (runs/drives... lights, interior, brakes, rust...) is there anything particular to look out for on them?

They seem to be ok little cars... It's got the 2.3, and a lady owns it... so I doubt it's been abused (could be, but W/E).

I hear that's a pretty tough engine, but so we'll have to see...

He doesnt have any plans of a 302 swap... yet... cause he cant exactly afford it, but yeah, he just wants something nicer to drive around in then his old POS corolla...

So yeah, if anyone's intereasted in looking at it, PM me. No timetable yet... He needs to ask his insurance company if they'd increase his rates (DONT ASSUME SO, because he'd only have liability)... And he needs to get a loan, to fix his current car (sell it), and get a new one ready to go...

Tks alot everyone, I appreciate it
PM me with any questions or anything

~Nate

he had a 92 corolla with a 1.6... Slow as BAWLZ!!! But yeah, just got off the phone with the owner.

Allright, here's whats up with it.

Her daughter used it for a commuter between madison and jainsvil everyday for a while.. 37 MPG on the highway.

New clutch, battery, altenator...

Needs brake pads soon (not much pads left, but "enough for a few months")

Drivers door handle's broken, and needs help to open... Passengers side door's got issues. Apparetly her daughters husbend slammed the door when it was cold out, and there was a "clink", and it didnt work anymore...

The e-brake was stuck on, so somebody cut the cable, and the light's on...

Price's $550, she REALLY wants it gone.

Thoughts, opinions?

What do you want done? Compression test? Have a mechanic look at it? Take pics?

I had a 89 Merkur XR4Ti with a 2.3L Turbo. Put a turbo, ported intakes, head, cam, intercooler, changed the VAM to MAS, boost controller, etc, etc. Made it quick as hell for what it was.

The four cylinders in those aren't particularly durable.

If you want something long lasting, and cheap, the Crown Victoria is the way to go. They are safer too, and very easy to repair, and are the choice of police and taxi services, where dependability, durability and space count for a lot. Nothing comes close to one.

However for $550, this car should last you for 6 months, if you are lucky, and your friend needs cheap wheels right away, it might be worth a gamble.

That's been on Madison CL forever. I would check it out VERY closely before I rolled the dice on it. My friend in Withee (WI) works in Eau Claire and is working on making a Jetta roadworthy if you're interested. It'll be cheap, but he may not get to it for a bit yet -- I hear the weather's not cooperating up there right now.

As for the 37mpg... I don't buy it. My 87 5 speed 2.3 never saw close to that!

If I idled it and towed it behind my Powerstroke and only drove it to park it, sure.
