Yesterday's shootings. What would you do if...

I'm surprised that nobody rushed the gunman. It's easy to sit back and play armchair quarterback, but if confronted with a similiar situation I would probably get a bunch together and try rip out the gunman's windpipe. Easier said than done of course.

What do they teach your kids in your schools? We have a lockdown drill where we get under the desk. All doors are locked.

I wanna teach my kid better than that. We seem to have bred courage and character out of our kids these days.

Dunno. Hard to say unless you were there IMO. I would guess many of the kids there were probably brave enough, but facing gunfire? I think you need to be hardened to that, and experienced in order to react is my guess.

As I posted in another thread, I was part of a scuffle when I was around 20 years old, where a gun was pulled and stuffed into someone's face. Everyone just stopped instantly. Things went very quiet and I completely froze. I have no problem admitting that I was scared *****less.

I couldn't have tied my laces let alone Steven Seagal-ed the gunman.

Yeah, it's easy to "arm chair quarterback" things like this. I've never been in a situation where someone who had the will and desire to kill me was actually shooting my way. I have had a gun pulled on my once. I was pretty compliant after that. Funny, that shotgun looked bigger than any gun I've seen before or since!

I'm not saying that I'm fearless or even overly courageous, but I can't imagine seeing what was going on and not trying to intervene at some point. Even if waiting until he was reloading or something. If I weren't armed I can't picture myself not tackling the guy. I just don't know.

Maybe he had military training. He was methodical in what he did and obviously wasn't afraid to die. There is very little they could have done.

The news said he was South Korean. It didn't specify his age, but there is mandatory military service (minimum 2 years, longer in some cases) in Korea for all healthy males that must be completed by age 30, so it is quite likely this fellow had a significant amount of weapons training depending on what his service was. I think it would take at least some conditioning to that kind of environment to expect anyone to have reacted differently, expecially as it appears to have happend very quickly.

I am wondering the same thing I would guess that most of the students were 18-22 years old and able to take him on, especially during a reload.

In one report a girl said that he took down at least 10 people in the first barrage of shots and considering his guns had a max capacity of 15, it may be sick to say but under the circumstances that is pretty accurate, he knew how to handle those weapons.

I don't think it's a question of whether or not any of the students were brave enough to take on a gunman. There is no doubt that it could have been done. But the problem in any situation like that is the inablility to communicate. No one knew that was going to happen, and when it did the students had no plan of action. If a few of the students had rushed the gunman he probably would have gone down like a flat tire. But in order for that to happen, someone has to make the first move. And chances are whoever makes that first move will end up shot. You would likely even end up shot if you tried to yell to everyone, "Hey let's rush this guy." That makes it even more difficult to initiate something like that.

There's alot of Monday morning armchair quarterbacks out there...

I'm sure it was just a little stressful and confusing with people screaming, running and panic stricken.

Aikido would be better for her.look into it.I have several black belts in multiple styles.Tae kwan do is a very aggressive style and will not teach tolerance or the ability to "run away".Or even capoeira for that matter. Both of these styles will encourage thought process not just reaction.Look into it.

Thanks for the tip and I will look into, the TKD is a start up class instructed by a client so I am going to take the el freebo route for now until we find the right discipline for her.
