How'd you find your job?

Although I have been looking casually for a new job for a while, my hunt has suddenly intensified. I was wondering what others here had found to be most helpful in finding a job.

Knowing someone in the company with connections...

...better yet, being MARRIED to someone with connections!

The only job I ever "looked for" was the first job out of university. The rest have been through referrals or where people who I've worked with in the past have approached me.

A friend now uses LinkedIn to post his resume and build his network as he is now contracting. It works well as you can view recommendations by people who you have worked with in the past and can trust.

I am on LinkedIn, too. So far I have not found it tremendously helpful. I agree that referrals are the way to go.

Alas! My ne-POT is empty. I worked for my dad in the construction business back in the 70's, but prefer some other route to that anyhow.

A lot of people, friends included, think working in a family business is a piece of cake. At one point I worked for both my father and grandfather who had diametrically opposed views on how things should be done. When my father became Prez things improved for me at least, the generation gap was cut in half. In my case (and my brother's) I've had to jump through each hoop that my father did, that his father did and so on through 4 generations. He just turned 63 and is talking retirement (unlike my grandfather who worked until his death at 83, great grandfather until 85). After 10 years my salary is finally getting near commensurate to my work/hours. Generations of work ethic have been passed on if nothing else.

It's definitely trying at times and not for everyone. That's probably why most family businesses don't make it past the first generation.

I have only had a couple of jobs, all but one were gotten through knowing someone.

The fastest was the store, I just walked in talked to the owner and he said sure tell me when you can work. 5 minutes. I have been their for four years, leaving in 4 weeks. Worked for him, I have never called in, had any issue with the customers or another empolyee, just do my job collect the check and leave.

The coolest, was Re/Max. Talked to the owner who I have known forever, she was my grandmothers partner in the business forever. She was like yeah lets talk sometime. So we talked over drinks on the fly bridge of her boat, what a great way to conduct business.

My favorite job was found (out of desperation) from the Washington, DC yellow pages. Under "political organizations".

No amount of networking or ad searching would have allowed me to find it. Just in the right place at the right time and there were only two others applicants to compete with.
