I built a tesla coil about a year ago, let me see if I can find the pictures I took... I blew it up though, and dismantled it. For protection, you wear the opposite of what you would expect, metal, not rubber.. Rubber under metal works too though, At that voltage, you don't try to insulate yourself, you give it a better path to follow instead. Electricity follows the path of least resistance.

It's not the voltage that makes this the case. It's the lack of current available.

Do not touch the high-tension lines wearing conductive shoes. Whatever part of you touches the line and the ground will literally explode.

I always assumed that electricity like this was not harmful unless you became grounded. As long as you don't provide it with a path to ground, wouldn't you be safe? That shot of the two guys crawling long the top of those power lines just looked absolutely surreal, though!
