We have fraternal twins, a boy and a girl, and they are 3 1/2 years old.

Twins are indescribably hard as infants because the workload is more than double. It's like triple because things happen simultaneously, like feeding and burping and changing, while at the same time, naps don't occur at the same time, so you never get a break.

Your daughter-in-law is going to need help.

We're dealing with 4 kids (IIRC you had 5?) and people think we're crazy and strung out. I can not even begin to imagine what going through twins must be like. God bless them!

i often wonder at my folks who had eight of us.

and there are folks out there with 12 and more.

my youngest sister had twins when her oldest was 18 months. she is not the most stable person anyway and nearly lost it completely when the twins came along.
