Halberstam killed

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/04/24/HALBERSTAM.TMP

This was a bit close for me. The intersection he was killed at is one I go through 4 or 5 times a week. A UC journalism grad student was driving him to an interview. Not revealed yet who was at fault but it sounds like they got struck by someone running a red light.

Can you imagine being the driver in an accident that kills one of your heroes?

Oh man, that's bad. I would have enjoyed meeting the man. Halberstam was a really great journalist and author, he gave a lot. RIP

I admit, I'm not much of a reader. I just don't have the time or attention span. While I've started probably a hundred or so books I've only actually finished a handful. But I did just finish his book, The Education of a Coach about Bill Belichick (N.E. Patriots) and it was great. His writing style was such that it was just easy for me to keep going. Of course an interest in the subject matter didn't hurt, but it really was an enjoyable read and I'll probably read some of his others.

I can understand why so many think he was one of the great modern writers.

That grad student must feel terrible. I really liked his book on the 50's.
