They are slowly creeping into the affordable range for the basic model. They look like a lot of fun. I've seen several on the golf courses w/bag carrier attachments.

I've considered getting one since I could get away with using one for most of my daily errands. I guess they top out around 12mph but since I could cruise the sidewalks and through small openings that a car couldn't fit through, thus avoiding sitting at stoplights. I bet my bank and post office runs when we don't have much mail would be about the same amount of time.

Something like a GEM would be perfect for most of my daily use but you can't register one in CT for road use. I'm not averse to true electic cars, purchase price aside.

They are available for rent at various locations, so you can test ride one for a few hours. Last year we took a Segway tour of the Gettysburg battleground. It only took a few minutes to get the hang of climbing on, starting and stopping. There are different 'keys' to limit top speed until you are comfortable going the full 12mph. We were out for 4 hours, and it took the hills pretty well considering my 200#.

They are constantly being updated. The ones we drove turned using a left-hand twist grip. (It was pretty funny when my wife fell off hers, and the Segway started chasing her around in circles because she was still holding the grip). The newer ones turn by just leaning right or left. Where I live, I wouldn't be able to use it daily, but it was a fun family activity.

Well,to each his own I suppose. If you considered 1 hour of vigorous walking instead of motoring about on that device you may notice a slow but progressive reduction of the somewhat noticeable avoirdupois protruding just above the beltline,hence validating my original post

Yes, but the weight of the tanks demands that I wear suspenders. That's the bad news. The good news is that I was pleased to discover that Segway is offering a revolutionary GPS/driving control interface that will allow the vehicle to self-direct to the local Pizza Hut.

...and then to the gym, to ride a stationary exercise bike.

I saw a fellow this weekend riding one down main street, half in the bike lane and half in the car lane. He also looked like Homer Simpson, complete with white T-shirt and blue jeans(nothing wrong with that per se).
