Exclamation MB dealers SUCK!

Well, I started looking at the car in more detail and popped the hood. Boy what a nice looking engine! I checked the air filter and it was dirty as HECK. The car has had all services done by the dealer, ie serviceA as well as Service B and the last Service B was done only about 2000 miles ago! The air flter had not been changed it looks like in about 3 years! It was so dirty that I laid it down on a table and when I picked it back up there was so much dirt on the table! It seems like the dealer charged the poor old man but NEVER actually changed the air filter! IMAGINE THAT .
Should I replace it with a K&N filter becase it is washable?
Secondly, I went to Autozone and go a cleaner, took out the MAF and cleaned. It is too late now for me to put the car back together but I will report tomorrow. The battery's negetive terminal is off and will remain off all night so does that mean that the codes will be erased?
Please pray all goes well.
Thanks!

I don't think your codes will be earsed on that model.

The code reader that pulled the code will earse them though.

Don't use K & N. Requires oil and will foul your MAF. Search here, lots written.

Lots cheaper to buy a filter every once in a while than a new MAF.

Your new car is extremely attractive, and looks very sporty with the rear wing on the back, usually not something I like but it suits your car well, as do the rich Designo interior touches. Very very nice score!

I'm sorry to hear about the air filter, but I am on the side of those who doesn't believe in the K and N air filters. They might give slightly better air flow but do so at the expense of filtration, they could clog up the MAF or put other internals at risk. To me, the 2 or 3 hp they might give you isn't worth the concommitant risk. Also, the K and N filters need to be greased, and if it isn't done properly, there can be problems later on.

Hi Designo_E320, congrats on your new ride. I hope you enjoy it, it's a great car.

I do have a question concerning your air filter issue though. True, the Service Sheet used by MB dealers' does recommend replacing the air filter at 60K, but it's up to the owner to decide if he/she wants to spend the money for it. Perhaps the previous owner of your car deferred replacing the air filter? If you have the P.O.'s reciept for the last B-Service you'll know if the "poor old man" was charged for it or not.

That is a very broad statement....I wouldn't throw words around with out having visited all of the 350+ MB dealers in this country!

You might find that a "snake" of a lawyer is after you!

You are right. I just got so angry when I saw the filter I just had to take my frustration out and I posted this thread and the title. BUT you are definately 100% CORRECT about this being a very broad statement

Glad you can recognize a joke...hope you aren't a lawyer!!

With FSS (flex service) filter replacement IS the customers option.

I haven't been following the text of your Designo too closely, however I did check the pictures and liked very much what I saw.

If you do a check on the web for Startuned Magazine and MBwholesaleparts you can sign in and use the archives to read an article on Mb filters - this will clue you in on where and what to purchase regarding filters.
The filter article was recent I believe.

Also check your windshield wiper blades, I try to change mine out every six months.

I wanted to add something, I read an article in the 5/7/07 AUTOMOBILE section of the New York Times, concerning GM's certified used car program, read it!

I sure don't agree with the 60,000 mile air filter replacement listed in my service booklet. When my SLK was in for the first B service, it was 3 years old and had 22,604 miles. The dealer replaced the oil, filter, air filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, and activated charcoal filter.
Since that time I have replaced the air filter twice, at 29,252 and 42,470 miles.
I change the oil (Mobil1 0-40 Syn.) every 5,000 miles and check the air filter condition.

Great looking car Designo_E320.....good luck with it!

Dave

and people wonder why I bought two Cadillac Eldorado's for my wife and I to drive, instead of a certain German marque made in Stuttgart.
