1949 Willys Overland Wagon....

Hi Guys,
A business associate of mine in NJ just purchased a 49 Willys Jeep. Here are the pics.

http://picasaweb.google.com/thadanir/Jeep1949WillysOverlandWagon

He's interested in doing some restoration and repair as well as adding a rear seat. Anyone know of some good sources for parts? Is it normal for first gear not to engage unless your at a complete stop? Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Adam

Years ago, I had a '55 which was quite similar. If I recall correctly, first was not synchromesh, and thus you can only engage it while moving if you double-clutch.

We had a pickup (1954?) that came with our cabin in Hayward. It was basically used to get the boat out of the water, haul firewood, shine deer (kidding), pull stumps etc. A total beater, but we never had to anything with it except fog the motor before winter storage.

It was was left with the cabin when Dad sold it.

Anyhow, if I were him, I'd to join the Willys Overland Jeepster Club to get some solid leads on parts sources: http://www.jeepsterclub.com/

My first car was a 1947 willys overland wagon with overdrive. It was really cool; with bean bag chairs in the back...i carried a lot of friends to school and church with that rig. Charged them sometimes...
Every old guy that said they owned one once always ended the conversation with; "it was purty good till I rolled it".
Yes you have to come to a complete stop to put it in first. In fact with mine I had to put it in second and quickly throw it over into first or it would grind.
It is here.
