How many of you younger guys here have "Hand me downs"

So, Just curious, but how many of our members here have cars handed down from older relatives, or something?

How many of you actually went out, and bought your Mercedes yourselves?

How many of you are younger than your Mercedes?

I went out.. made a deal with the p/o to pay her 250$ a month for it while I drove it.. A gentlemans agreement of the sorts. I paid her off 4 months ahead of schedule and made it run better. When I picked it up it was sluggish . Turns out the alda needed adjusting as well as cleaning the banjo bolts.

I am younger than my 1985 300D. I am the fifth owner. The 300D was sold in tampa to the first owner and bought by me the fifth owner. The car has never left the tampa bay area its entire life .

I went down to the Peach State Auto Auction and bought my baby with my own money.. $300 after $200 of auction fees.. Really lucky night! Engine was smoking a little so noone else bid, noone else noticed that the hose from the valve cover to the air cleaner was missing.. Have had no problems that weren't regular maintenance or caused by an accident.. The car is almost 10 years older than me.

We technically got the car (300D) from my grandma, as a "gift" so it's a hand me down if you want to call it that way. But, the repairs, work and maintenance I try to do them so that the car eventually pays for itself. So I basically "buy my own nearly restored 300D" ...

Why did you ask?

The car is 6 months younger than me. It was born Dec 1982...

I purchased my car from my best friends father. I use to think it was the ugliest car ever, and wanted a 190D or newer 300D. After a while though, i really enjoyed the car and wanted it. finally he offered it for sale. Since the price was really high (for me anyways) i let it sit in his garage for about a year until he needed to sell it for family reasons. Also the brakes were weak. Although i didn't have what he was asking at the time, he aloud me to make payments on it. 2 paychecks and it was mine. I really thought i could just drive it hehe. little did i know i would get this deep into the car. When i first got it, the front brakes went out. and i actully drove it like that for a while. Just alot of down shifting, and early braking. 2 days later the GP light wasn't working (bad relay) and of course i just cranked it alot until it started. well guess what happened next, yes the starter went out. I guess i finally relized after that, that i would be spending alot of time with her. So no it wasnt a hand-me-down. Just a somewhat good deal

The SDL was my second car, I got it my senior year of high school. I got rid of a very nice Camry, in hindsight I should have just kept both. Anyway the SD was my third.

All were paid for with cash, my prefered way of buying things like this. Other then give me a very temporary loan on the Camry my parents always stayed out of my car buying. The Camry came up kind of fast and I didn't have the money on hand. But it was a good deal so my dad kicked in $1,500 which I paid back in a month or so.

In the mean time I will probably buy my third MB this fall, maybe a mid 90's E class. Something nice but still pretty cheap, when I get out of college in a year and a half I want to get either a 1-2 year old E class, or a new C.

In hindsight I should have just kept the Camry for another year or two and saved up some money. Then bought like a 1999 or 2000 E320.

My wife was the original owner of the 1985 190E. She wanted a new car and passed it over to me and created a wife's worse nightmare . . . a husband with a hobby.

I inherited a Fiat 124 convertible from my parents, then happily returned it to them after 2 years.

From what I see around here the majority of kids that "inherit" or buy their MB seem to be top notch teens with an ambition to fix their own cars.

My dad bought mine new in 1987 (when I was 5) and gave it to me in 2003, when I was 21 and in my last year of college. My older sister drove it for a year before that, but didn't want to deal with it and didn't have any real interest in cars (unlike me, she had a social life instead!). She got a new Jetta TDI, which I could have done too after college but I decided to keep the Benz (FOREVER). It's been fun because not only do I have a car I can be "hands on" with and learn from, I drive around in something that's been a part of my life since I was 5 years old. I think my dad was glad I decided to keep it, too, because I always got the feeling it was more special to him than a lot of the other cars he's owned over the years ... think he would have been sad to see it go to some stranger and not be loved like it is now.

I did also buy a Jeep Liberty diesel to have a winter car and something big enough to tote things around in if need be. Allows me to baby the Benz a bit more, after it put up with so much for 20 years.
