Where are we gonna find a hole big enough to contain the bodies? I guess we could cremate 'em, but still, the hole will need to be BIG (maybe that gigantic meteor crater in Arizona?).

Actually, all it means is that they executed a fall guy. No doubt he was corrupt. However, bribes are a common thing. Where I work, they actually demand it openly. So, all it really means is that it has hit the fan and now they have a person to take the fall. They execute him and life goes on. Problem solved.

I think you're right -- but it is nice to dream.

The Chinese also made it clear that they did not have a SARS problem. A few isolated cases only. When WHO came visiting, they saw the few patients and concluded that it was being taken care of. In the meantime, the SARS patients were taking joyrides in ambulances all around town.

When I was in Shanghai last fall, they executed a local white collar functionary for falsification of some government tax records. Weird but, you gotta remember there are a LOT of people living in China and traditionally, not much value is placed on individual human lives.
