Looking for some good torque wrenches
 

Hey guys,

Looking to buy a couple of torque wrenches. What is the brand/type of choice around here amongst the wrenches? Thanks :D

I bought a Snap-On, paid $250ish, which I know is a lot, but it's a nicely made one with a well-made case. I feel good about the quality of the item.

I use Mitutoyo, very well made and accurate even after all these years of use.

Only time you need an expensive torque wrench is if you do engine building. For lug nuts and crap like that, go to Sears. A 3/8 is very useful, most people have a 1/2 which is good for high torque values. A 1/4 is even handier for small things.

Since you are probably not going to make your living with these torque wrenches, i.e., you might use them 10 times a year, check out Harbor Freight. What they offer is perfectly ok for the average mechanic.

Thanks guys. I'm only going to be using them for lug nuts, oile filter housings & plugs, spark plugs ect. Nothing like real engine building. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll hit Sears and Harbour Freight first.

I bought a Harbor Freight 3/8 torque wrench and used it like 3 or 4 times. I was replacing a head gasket on my son's car 2 weeks ago and over torqued because the damn thing didn't click in. :mad:

POS I always stored it unloaded too.

Get one from Sears. I bought a cheapo off ebay for lug bolts and stuff.


When I did the timing chain and lifters on the SDL last winter I borrowed a couple of freshly calibrated Snap On's.

You only really need a good torque wrench if you are doing internal engine work.
