E 420 with Temp. related ASR & ABS problom
I have 1994 E420, recently both ASR & ABS lights comes when the temperature guage read 80 degrees; NO overheating problem. The car will start and drive normal until the temperature hit 80 degrees, then both lights comes on with engine still running and a sudden lost of accelation power, and pressing the accelator pedal require greater effort.
Suggestion to tackle this problem will be highly appreciated. |
Posting in the tech forum will better mechanical replies. Best answer you'll get in the open discussion is that the problem is caused by Islamic terrorists.

The accelerator pedal is exhibting the "limp-home" response. |
Check out Jim's pages. Pull the codes (a search will yield a lot of info, including how to build your own reader) Basic codes you can get w/o a reader, by using the pushbutton and the LED.
Don't bother complaining to MB about defective wiring in the harness and the ETA - they know nothing about it (yeah, right). |
E420 Temp related ASR/ABS problem
Thanks JimF,
I am now convinced this baby must go to the dealer for this repair; all alone I had suspected both Throttle body and the Cruise/throttle control module as culpable. I am only afraid of the dealers’ price for these parts. |
You're going to go to the Dealer? Boy, you must be a glutton for punishment. Either find a good mechanic, or do it yourself. (unless you have some good friends working at a Dealer).
It sounds like it might be brain surgery, but it is not - don't be afraid. For what the dealer is going to charge you, you can do this yourself, and pay for a rental car (in case this takes you more than a day, because you are doing it one-handed), and still save money compared to taking it to a dealer. |

If you have a independent shop you probably do better . . the dealer prices for the ETA and labor are abit steep, |
As Jim just said, the prices for ETA's are NOT cheap - I don't know if the dealer will let you use a rebuilt unit - so now you are looking at really big bucks.
You might be thinking, that the car isn't worth that kind of money...maybe you are right....I'll take it off your hands for $1k and send you a thank-you card. :D |
