Veteran Shanghai cat rescuer Duo Zirong started off her mission recently when she called police to stop a truck stuffed with some 800 live cats, the China Daily said. The standoff happened at a parking lot in a southern suburb of Shanghai. It continued for hours while cat lovers spread word of the incident online, eventually raising $1,320 in donations to buy the whole load. They now hope to place them in homes after posting their pictures and profiles on the Internet. "They were so frightened," the report quoted one of the rescuers, Huo Puyang, as saying. "Some bit people when they tried to let them out of the boxes. Some still hide in dark corners and will not come out for food," Huo said. Cat meat is considered a delicacy in southern China and cats are sold live to markets where they are slaughtered fresh for customers. |
Hardly a delicacy in many parts - it's just meat. I've been in multiple restaurants and markets in Shunde (Guangdong province, south eastern part of China - sitting in the Pearl River delta) where there were cages full of live dogs, cats, birds, and snakes right alongside the aquariums full of alligators, fish, beetles, eels, and shell fish of indescribable size and color. Walk in, pick your entrée, and it's slain, cooked, and served within minutes.
Saving a single truck load of cats isn't going to change the fact that a given culture accepts as food some animals that others see as pets. I don't understand why there is outcry over cats in China, but not over horses in Canada..... |
i won't eat anything that has eyes....
This happened right after China executed the food and drug safety chief....well cat's out of the bag now! |
I love to eat that if it's properly prepared.

Maybe it's time for me to change my breakfast of cold pop tarts and toxic shock coffee to something better.
Let's see, how about a nice, big, organic..............bowl of .........dirt. ........And a glass of wood........ |
the cats, dogs, etc. that you find in most restaurants in China are strays that they catch on the streets, and then subsequently sell to the restaurants as food...it keeps the street clean, and provides money/incentive to people who actively go out onto the streets to find stray cats...seems to me to be a better way to control animal population vs. the method we do here in the US/Canada, where our tax money is used to fund pounds/neutering programs/adoption programs/etc. furthermore, when the animal isn't adopted, they are put down...
I think the protesters in China should focus their energy on teaching the Chinese to tag and neuter family pets...and to make these so-called "scouts" who comb the streets for stray animals to check for tags and return family pets...there were a lot of issues with family pets/cats who roam the streets at night being caught and sold as food because they didn't have any identification... |

"There will be a pu*** in every pot." "If you don't eat your pu*** you can't have any meat. How can you have your meat if you don't eat your pu***?" Shall I continue. Maybe not. I apologize to the starving pygmies.... |
